Now that you know how to find the best NHL betting app and how to deposit, it’s time to place your bets. But, before that, you should know which are the most common bet types for hockey to find the best one for you.
Moneyline
The moneyline is a standard bet type you’ll come across on every sport. When you bet on the moneyline, you predict which team will win the match. It doesn’t matter how many goals they score; you just need the team you bet on to win.
Since hockey has overtime as a possible result, you’ll somtimes find the standard moneyline bet that includes a third option in NHL betting apps. There’s also the 3-way moneyline bet with options for the home or away teams to win or for the match to go to overtime.
Total Goals
For the total goals bet type, you wager on how many goals you think will be scored by both teams combined. These bets are also known as over/under bets since there’s a specific number of goals, and you bet on whether the total goals will be under or over that number.
In most hockey betting apps, you’ll find many lines for goals scored both with and without overtime. This way, you can place safer or riskier bets, depending on how you think a match will progress.
Puck Line
The puck line is basically the hockey term for the point spread bet you’ll find on other sports. When you bet on the puck line, you want your team to win by a specific goal margin or lose by up to a certain number of goals.
Because hockey games can be very tight, the usual puck line is a handicap of 1.5 goals. If you bet on the favourite with a -1.5 handicap, you want them to win by two goals or more. If you wager on the outsider with a +1.5 handicap, you want the team to lose by one goal, tie the game, or win.
Some online hockey betting apps will give you many puck lines to choose from. If you want to take a risk and believe that one team will stomp their opponent, you can bet on a higher puck line to gain much better odds.
Proposition Bets
Proposition bets are also known as “props” and revolve around specific events that don’t necessarily affect the match's outcome. On an NHL betting app, you’ll usually find two types of prop bets; team props and player props.
Team props are bets that involve the entire team or even both teams. Some of the most common ones include a team winning a particular period or both teams scoring a goal. A player prop is tied to a specific player and usually revolves around them scoring a goal. But you may come across more player props like assists, shots on goal, or power play points.
Future Bets
Future bets are a unique category consisting of long-term bets that span an entire season. The most common NHL future bets are for the Stanley Cup winner, the Hart Trophy winner, and the winner of each conference.
Some hockey apps may offer more detailed future bets, such as Division winners and teams to make the playoffs or not. There are also additional future bets for specific player stats, like the top goal scorer, the most points and the most assists.
