Portugal
Spain’s neighbours Portugal in a period of transition. They have plenty of talented youngsters and players in their prime –like Rúben Dias, Rafael Leão, and Pedro Neto– but players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe are equally still around. This mix of youth and experience could be useful, or it could come back to bite the Portuguese if the elder statesmen fail to deliver.

Belgium
Speaking of elder statesmen, Belgium is full of them. The Red Devils’ “golden generation” is all but over. Eden Hazard is gone and this is likely the last Euros for players like Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku. If they don’t win here, Belgium might not ever win a European Championship. 

Italy
The Azzurri squeaked into the Euro 2024 tournament via their head-to-head goal difference over Ukraine in the qualifying tournament. Our soccer betting experts wouldn’t call them favourites, necessarily, but it would be a mistake to write off a team that has shown time and time again that they know how to grind out results in elimination games. After all, they are the defending champions.

Jude Bellingham - While he won’t be playing up front for England, Bellingham will be playing at #10 just behind Harry Kane, and will be looking to get forward at every opportunity. With 20 goals in all competitions for Real Madrid this season, it would be a mistake to write off Bellingham as a candidate for the Golden Boot.

Euro 2024 is being hosted by Germany. 51 matches will be played across 10 venues in 10 host cities. The tournament starts with a 24-team group stage with 16 teams progressing to a knockout round. See below for a full breakdown of this structure.

Tournament

24-teams are put into six groups of four. Each team will play each other once. The top two nations from each group will automatically qualify for the playoff rounds. 

The four best third placed teams (i.e., the third placed teams with the most points) will also advance, meaning 16 teams will qualify for the playoffs. 

The playoffs

The 16 teams who qualify from the Euro 2024 are placed into a single elimination knockout playoff. The Round of 16 will be followed by the quarter-finals, then the semi-finals, and then the final in Berlin on July 14.

Teams competing at Euro 2024 are broken into six groups of four. The top two from each group and the four best third place teams will advance to the next round. Here are groups, a little about each team, and some notable players from each nation.

Group A: Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, Hungary

Group A is one of the toughest groups at Euro 2024. Hosts Germany should qualify. After that, it’s a free for all. Most Euro 2024 betting odds have Switzerland as second favourites in the group, but it could really go either way. 

Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer, Leroy Sané, and Joshua Kimmich suiting up for die Mannschaft. Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos will also be there after announcing his decision to unretire from the national team. 

For Scotland, expect to see Man United’s Scott McTominay, and Liverpool’s Andy Robertson. Robertson will go against his Liverpool teammate Dominik Szoboszlai, who plays for Hungary. Switzerland also has an EPL connection with former Liverpool and Arsenal players Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka.

Group B: Spain, Croatia, Italy, Albania

Like Group A, this group should be super competitive. Any one of these teams, barring Albania, could top this group. Spain are expected to finish top, according to the betting sites, but we all know that La Roja are capable of slipping up in the group stage. 

Barcelona wonderkids Pedri and Lamine Yamal are the most exciting names Spain will probably bring to Euro 2024. Croatia will rely on veterans like Luka Modric and Ivan Perisic, Italy are the wild card here as they are a team in transition with plenty of quality. Meanwhile, Chelsea prospect Armando Broja will be a part of the Albania squad. 

Group C: Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, England

It’s becoming cliche to say at this point, but England have yet another easy group at a major tournament. Denmark could cause the Three Lions trouble, but besides that, they should make it out of the group easily.

Besides England, it is a toss-up between Denmark and Serbia. The Danes are favoured at the betting sites, partly because of their miraculous run in Euro 2020 after Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest on the field versus Finland, and the recent goalscoring form of Manchester United youngster Rasmus Hojlund. 

Eriksen will be on Denmark’s Euro 2024 squad along with his long-time teammate Kasper Schmeichel. Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Phil Foden headline the England squad. Former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic and Atlético Madrid’s Jan Oblak will lead Serbia and Slovakia, respectively. 

Group D: France, Austria, Netherlands, Play-off winner A

France are one of the favourites to win Euro 2024. They are also strong favourites to qualify from Group D. Apart from France, the Netherlands are expected to qualify. Austria are tipped to qualify as a third placed team, but it really matters who comes through the Play-off. Wales, Finland, Poland, or Estonia could join this group. 

Kylian Mbappe is the big name in this group. His future Real Madrid teammate David Alaba will suit up for Austria. Virgil Van Dijk will be the rock at the back of the Netherlands back line. 

Group E: Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, Play-off winner B

Euro 2024 is Belgium’s golden generation’s last chance to win a major tournament. This group gives them a strong chance of starting the tournament on the right foot. If the Red Devils play at their best, we don’t see any of these teams causing them problems. 

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Israel, or Iceland will join this group after the final Euro qualifying playoff. Any of these teams stand a chance of advancing from this group. With that being said, the betting sites have Romania going through with Belgium. 

Group F: Turkey, Portugal, Czech Republic, Play-off winner C

Turkey was everyone’s dark horse heading into Euro 2020. They are coming into Euro 2024 with much less expectations, but we still think they should get out of this group. Portugal, one of the tournament favourites, should also get out of the group. 

According to the Euro 2024 odds, Czech Republic has a strong chance to qualify as a third-placed team. Georgia, Luxembourg, Greece, or Kazakhstan could also join this group. Whoever qualifies, they will likely finish bottom, though those of us old enough to remember Euro 2004 will know that the Greeks can spring a surprise. 

Euro 2024 starts on June 14, but the first dates you should pay attention to are the final qualifying playoffs. See below for the kick off times of those games and all the other important Euro 2024 dates. 

Euro 2024 Qualifying Playoffs

The final three Euro 2024 teams will be decided by two four team playoffs this March. One team from each playoff will enter the tournament. 

Path A:

• Wales vs. Finland, March 21, 2:45 pm ET
• Poland vs. Estonia, March 21, 2:45 pm ET

The final will be played on March 26 at 12:00pm or 2:45pm ET, depending on which teams qualify. 

Path B:

• Bosnia and Herzegovina vs. Ukraine, March 21, 2:45 pm ET
• Israel vs. Iceland, March 21, 2:45 pm ET

The final will be played on March 26 at 2:45pm ET.

Path C:

• Georgia vs. Luxembourg, March 21, 12:00pm ET
• Greece vs. Kazakhstan, March 21, 2:45 pm ET 

The final will be played on March 26 at 12:00pm or 2:45pm ET, depending on which teams qualify. 

Group Stage

There will be 36 group stage games played at Euro 2024. That’s too many for us to list them all here, but here are some of the big matches you should know about:

• Match 1: Germany vs. Scotland, June 14, 3:00 pm ET
• Match 3: Spain vs. Croatia, June 15, 12:00pm ET
• Match 17: Denmark vs. England, June 20, 12:00 ET
• Match 20: Netherlands vs. France, June 21, 3:00 pm ET
• Match 28: Croatia vs. Italy, June 24, 3:00 pm ET

Knockout Rounds

The group stage will be fun, but the knockouts are when things really kick into gear. This round starts on June 29 with a match between the runners up of Group A and Group B. This phase culminates with the final on July 14th in Berlin at 3:00pm ET.

Euro 2024 is the 17th UEFA European Football Championship and the second hosted by Germany. It’s also the third ever Euros tournament to feature 24 teams instead of the traditional 8 and 16-team formats that dominated the tournament’s history. 

10 cities will host matches at Euro 2024. These cities include Berlin, Munich, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Gelsenkirchen, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Leipzig. The tournament will start in Munich at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena. The final will be held at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, which has a capacity of over 74,000.

Germany is a country with a lot of soccer infrastructure, so they did not need to invest a lot in updating stadiums or other fan sites. UEFA expects to make over $2.5 billion from the tournament. 

Adidas, a Germany company and one of the biggest Euro 2024 sponsors, has honoured Germany with their official match ball, called the FUSSBALLLIEBE. The mascot is a teddy bear named Albärt. Other official tournament symbols and songs will be announced closer to the tournament. 

As hosts, Germany are one of the favourites to win Euro 2024, but it will be tough for them as they’re on a long run of bad form at international tournaments and with the competition being so tough this year.

Euro 2024 is primed to be one of the most exciting European Championships in over a decade. Here are some interesting facts to whet your appetite before the big tournament.

Solo host format returns

Euro 2020 was notable for a lot of reasons. The biggest one being that it was actually held in 2021. Besides that, Euro 2020 was a pan-European tournament held in 11 different UEFA countries. However, this was not the first multi-nation tournament. 

In fact, four out of the last six Euros have been hosted by multiple nations. This makes Euro 2024 relatively unique since it's a return to having one nation host the tournament. 

Final tournament for soccer legends

The Euros only come around every four years. This means for some older players, they may never get the chance to play in the Euros again. This year’s crop of older national team players is especially impressive. 

Euro 2024 could be the last Euros tournament for numerous legendary soccer players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Pepe, Manuel Neuer, Virgil van Dijk, and Kevin De Bruyne.

Familiar faces and some returning ones

Since the European tournament expanded to 24 teams, few teams have not made a European Championship appearance yet. Every team playing in the Euro 2024 tournament has made at least one appearance, but a number of teams are making their first appearances in a while. 

Albania and Romania are playing in their second ever Euros. Serbia and Slovenia are playing in their first since Euro 2000. Hungary have qualified for two consecutive tournaments for the first time in their history.

There are a lot of good teams competing at the Euro 2024 tournament. England, Spain, Germany, and even Portugal all could be winners in July, but there’s one team we can’t look past, and that’s France. 

We know it’s boring to pick one of the favourites, but we really don’t see another option here. Les Bleus are absolutely stacked at every position. Kylian Mbappé is genuinely one of the best players in the world, Antoine Griezmann is arguably playing the best soccer of his career, and the team is full of great young midfielders like Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni. 

The only way France doesn’t win is if they implode mentally like they did at the Euro 2020 tournament. This is always a possibility with France, but we’re inclined to think they’ll do better this time after they made it to the 2022 World Cup final without any major off-the-field incidents derailing that campaign.

Besides France being the winner, we also like Harry Kane to be the tournament’s top scorer, Mbappé to win the tournament’s best player, and Germany to go far. We also think some records will be broken. 

If Cristiano Ronaldo is called up by Portugal, he will probably break a lot of his own records. He’s currently the oldest Euros goalscorer, scored the most goals in Euros history, and played in most Euro final tournaments.
