How We Rank Bookmakers In Yukon

Yukon offers various betting opportunities through Sport Select and offshore betting brands. There are dozens of online bookmakers to choose from.

Our team uses unique criteria to examine each sportsbook and identify those with reliable, secure betting experiences. Here are the factors we consider:

  • Security and Trust: We only rank licensed sportsbooks with top-notch security.
  • Sports Coverage: Leading bookmakers cover all popular sports disciplines in North America.
  • Banking Methods: We look for sites with standard payment methods and fast payouts.
  • Customer Support: The best sportsbooks offer 24/7 support via live chat, email, and phone.
  • Bonuses and Promos: We review all bonus terms to find lucrative deals worth claiming.
  • Betting Features: Top bookmakers have fantastic betting features like live streaming, cashout, etc.

Sports Betting In Yukon

Sports betting in Yukon follows the same practices available in other Western Provinces. Gambling is legal through the locally-regulated Sport Select, which offers single-game bets and parlays on select sports.

However, Sport Select has many limitations, including confirming all bets at a retail shop. The best betting offers come from offshore brands. No law prohibits punters from joining legitimate offshore bookmakers like Sports Interaction, Betway, Bet365, and more. These sportsbooks allow remote betting and welcome punters from Yukon and other Canadian provinces.

Punters can bet on football, basketball, tennis, hockey, soccer, baseball, golf, and many other sports. Single-game bets became legal on November 1, 2021, when WCLC officially allowed such bets in the Western Provinces. However, punters already had access to such bets through offshore brands that have been operating in Canada for decades.

Is Sports Betting Legal in Yukon?

Yes. Sports betting is legal in Yukon and all other Western Provinces. The Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) and Lotteries Yukon regulate gambling activity in the region. WCLC governs betting throughout the Western Provinces, while Lotteries Yukon controls betting at the provincial level.

Punters can bet on popular sports through the Sport Select website, which is regulated by the local government. However, the platform only offers four sports, and all bets placed online must be confirmed at an offline retail betting outlet.

Punters seeking more options can join offshore betting platforms to wager on a comprehensive range of sports and markets. Only punters above 19 are allowed to place bets in Yukon.

What Sports Betting Options Are Legal In Yukon?

Betting in Yukon offers the same options available in other Canadian provinces. You can place wagers on the usual sports and leagues like the NFL, NHL, MLB, MLS, NBA, ATP/WTA, UFC, and more. Whether you fancy golf, eSports, badminton, surfing, lacrosse, skiing, or bandy, the bookmakers have you covered.

Sport Select doesn’t offer these options, but you can still enjoy football, basketball and hockey betting. Legal betting in Yukon includes single-game bets and parlay bets. Until November 1, 2021, punters could only place parlays.

However, Bill C-218 received royal assent and made single-game bets legal throughout Canada on August 27. Two months later, WCLC legalized the same throughout the Western Provinces. Punters can now bet on single events and parlays. Offshore betting brands also offer more sports, markets, and competitive odds to bet on.

Why Legalize Single-Game Sports Betting?

Single-game bets were not available in locally-regulated Canadian sportsbooks until August 2021. Regulators pushed for the legalization through Bill C-218, which passed the House of Commons and Senate.

Before that, Canadian sportsbooks lost billions of dollars in gambling revenue as punters used offshore websites to place single-game bets. Missing out on crucial revenue was the main reason behind legalizing single-game bets in Canada.

Many punters prefer single-event bets because they only need to make one correct prediction to win. Parlays involve multiple events and an increased risk of losing. Regulators needed to keep single-event bets in Canada, so they pushed to legalize them.

Which Are Steps Taken To Legalize Single-Game Bets?

Canada made single-game bets legal in 2021, but regulators pushed for the same as early as 2012. Two initial bills passed the House of Commons but were shut down in the Senate in 2015 and 2015.

Fortunately, Bill C-218 went through both houses and in 2021, the ban on single-game events was lifted. Here’s an overview of the key dates in Canada’s gambling and events that led to legal single-game sports betting in Yukon:

  • 1892: Canada Criminal Code is introduced, banning all forms of gambling. Only horse racing bets are permitted.
  • 1969: Bill-150 amends the Criminal Code to allow lotteries.
  • 1985: Canada allows parlay betting on sports using video devices, slot machines, and computers.
  • 2012: Bill C-290 passes the House of Commons but fails in the Senate. The bill seeks to legalize single-game betting.
  • 2016: Another attempt to legalize single-event betting fails to pass the Senate.
  • 2020: Bill C-218 is introduced and passes the House of Commons and Senate in 2021.
  • 2021: Bill C-218 receives royal assent, and August 27 becomes the official date when single-event bets are legal.
  • November 1, 2021: The Western Canada Lottery Corporation legalizes single-game bets within Yukon and other Western Provinces.

What Does Single-Game Betting Include?

Single-game betting involves placing wagers involving one outcome on the slip. For instance, you can bet on the Toronto Blue Jays to win their MLB match against the Seattle Mariners.

Another example is backing the Edmonton Oilers to cover a 1.5 point spread in their NHL match against the Golden Knights.

Single-game bets only include one event on the slip, unlike parlays, which involve two or more outcomes. Parlays offer better odds but come with an increased risk of losing since you have to make multiple predictions.

What’s In The Future For Yukon Sports Betting?

Yukon has yet to open its doors to private operators, and we don’t see them doing that soon. The province relies on Sport Select and offshore betting brands like Betway, Sports Interaction, Bet365, Bodog, etc.

However, some offshore brands like BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetRivers don’t offer betting products in Yukon. They’re only available in Ontario. At some point, we expect Yukon and other Canadian provinces to join Ontario by creating a legal framework for licensing sportsbooks.

Who Can Bet on Sports in Yukon?

Betting in Yukon comes with various restrictions. Only punters who meet the legal betting age are allowed to use Sport Select. You must not be self-excluded from local gambling sites. Local gambling is also restricted to players who live in the Western Provinces.

Below is an overview of all restrictions governing who can bet on sports in Yukon:

  • Age Limit: You must be at least 19 to bet in Yukon. This restriction ensures minors are protected from gambling and punters are verifiable adults. Punters below 19 won’t be allowed to sign up for an account with Sport Select.
  • Location Limits: You must be physically present in Yukon to use Sport Select. Bets must then be confirmed at a WCLC retail outlet. Offshore sportsbooks allow punters to join from anywhere in Canada and regions where the bookmaker is licensed.
  • Mobile Betting: Mobile betting is legal in Yukon. You can place sports bets directly on your mobile phone’s browser or using a dedicated app. Sport Select and offshore betting brands are all fully optimized for Android and iOS devices.
  • Self-Exclusion: You can voluntarily enroll in the self-exclusion program to take time away from gambling. Self-exclusion allows you to take breaks from six months to three years. You won’t be able to bet on Canadian sites during that time. Offshore sportsbooks also offer internal cool-off durations for self-exclusion.
  • Tax Laws: Like other Canadian provinces, Yukon doesn’t impose taxes on gambling winnings. Punters can keep 100% of their winnings without paying local or federal taxes. Such winnings are not taxable income anywhere in Canada.
  • Retail Betting: Yukon is home to casinos and sports betting retail outlets in the province. Punters can bet using Sport Select and confirm the bets at any of the 37 retail shops. This restriction allows Yukon to verify that punters are residents who meet the legal betting age.

Offshore Sportsbooks in Yukon?

Offshore betting sites operate in the grey area, which is the same case throughout Canada, except for Ontario. Yukon has no legal framework for licensing private operators like Betway, Sports Interaction, or Bodog.

However, punters are free to use these sportsbooks without any restrictions. Some brands like BetMGM and FanDuel aren’t available because they only operate in areas where they have a legal license.

In Canada, only Ontario has a framework to license third-party bookmakers. Nonetheless, many offshore sportsbooks licensed in Malta, Kahnawake, the UK, and Ontario accept players from Yukon and other provinces.

How to Start Betting In Yukon

Sports betting in Yukon is quite similar to betting in other Western Provinces. To start betting in Yukon, you must sign up for an account with a trustworthy sportsbook.

You’ll also need to deposit funds and find favourable markets. Here are all the steps you need to start betting in Yukon:

  1. Select A Sportsbook - Choosing a sportsbook is the first step in legal sports betting. Punters in Yukon have many options to choose from, including Sport Select and offshore bookmakers.

We recommend Sports Interaction, Bodog, Betway, Bwin, Bet365, and 888sport. You can use our ranking criteria to help you find trustworthy sports betting platforms that accept punters from Yukon. Stick to licensed sportsbooks.
  2. Sign-Up For An Account - Once you select a sportsbook, you can sign up for an account. Leading bookmakers offer a simple sign-up process that requires a few minutes to complete. Simply click the button named SIGN UP, CREATE ACCOUNT, REGISTER, JOIN, or something similar.

Next, enter your name, address, email, date of birth, and other required details. Lastly, verify your account by clicking the link sent to your email.
  3. Fund Your New Account - Now that you have a verified betting account, you can deposit funds to start betting. Yukon Sportsbooks accept a wide range of payment methods. You can use Visa, Mastercard, InstaDebit, Interac, iDebit, Bitcoin, Litecoin, Tether, ecoPayz, Neosurf, Bank Transfer, Paysafecard, AstroPay Card, etc.

Simply navigate to the banking section, select “Deposit," and follow the prompts. Bookmakers accept deposits from $10, but the amount varies from site to site.
  4. Claim a Bonus - Most betting sites in Yukon feature a welcome bonus for new players. The bonus can be a deposit match, like 100% up to $200.

Sometimes the bookmaker offers a risk-free first bet that refunds your first deposit if you bet and lose it. Other bookmakers also offer free bets. Make sure you read the bonus terms to determine when and how to claim your welcome offer.
  5. Explore Betting Markets - The next step after depositing funds is exploring the betting markets. Yukon betting sites offer thousands of markets every week on professional sports.

You can wager on hockey, football, basketball, tennis, golf, baseball, etc. To explore the markets, launch the sportsbook, find a sport like football or basketball, then open a league like the NFL, CFL, or NBA. You’ll see available events, markets, and odds.
  6. Place Your Sports Bet - Betting in Yukon is similar to other provinces. You can explore the moneyline, spread, total, or other markets. Simply open the event, find the market and click the odds. The sportsbook will generate a bet slip.

You can submit the single-game event or add more events to build a parlay. Finish by setting the stake and clicking on BET, SUBMIT, or a similar option under the bet slip.
  7. Using Betting Features - When betting, you can explore various features like live streaming, in-play bets, early cashout, parlay builders, bet boosts, and more. The live streaming feature lets you watch events unfold live.

In-play betting involves betting on ongoing matches, while early cashout lets you withdraw part of your winning before the event is fully played out. Parlay builders help you to create unique parlays with less effort.

Yukon bookmakers offer access to the same sports on legitimate Canadian betting sites. You’ll find markets and odds on football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, soccer, tennis, badminton, volleyball, boxing, rugby, etc. Below is a list of the popular sports to bet on in Yukon:

Football: American football is one of the popular sports in Canada, so fans of CFL and NFL betting can explore thousands of markets every week. Hockey: Ice hockey is a fan favourite you’ll find in all Yukon sportsbooks. Punters can bet on the regular NHL season, playoffs, and the Stanley Cup Finals. NHL betting also offers. traditional markets like the puck line, moneyline, total and futures. You’ll also find hockey events from the rest of the world.

Yukon punters can explore NBA betting opportunities throughout the season, culminating in the playoffs and the NBA Championship. Bookmakers also feature basketball events from Europe, Australia, Asia, and the rest of the world.

Soccer: Soccer fans have the most options in sportsbooks since the sport is popular worldwide. Bookmakers offer MLS betting for those following the North American league. You can also find European soccer events, including the EPL, La Liga, Serie A, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, and more. Other options include the World Cup and the Olympics.

Baseball: Punters in Yukon can enjoy MLB betting and baseball events from other leagues and countries. Baseball is popular throughout North America and offers exciting betting opportunities during the regular season, playoffs, and Major Series Finals. You’ll find the usual markets, including the money line, run line, total, props, and futures.

Other Sports: Yukon sports betting sites offer various other sports, including golf, cricket, badminton, handball, lacrosse, snooker, darts, tennis, table tennis, MMA UFC, Formula 1, Motorsport, surfing, skiing, etc. Sport Select only offers four sports, but you can find comprehensive coverage from offshore betting sites. There's enough to go around whether you fancy winter sports or specials.

Most Popular Markets

Yukon betting sites offer the same markets you’ll find across legitimate bookmakers in North America. You can explore moneyline, point spread, total, props, exotics, and futures. Below, we explore these markets in detail using examples:

Moneyline

Also known as the Outright Winner Bet, the moneyline is about betting on the team or player who will win a match/game. Here’s an example of a moneyline for the NBA event between the Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls:

  • Raptors: -220
  • Bulls: +440

In this example, the Raptors are the favourite, while the Bulls are the underdog. If you bet on the Raptors and they win, you’ll receive $100 from a $220 stake. Meanwhile, if you back the Bulls and they win, you’ll receive $440 from a $100 bet. Favourites and underdogs are denoted by the minus (-) and plus (+) signs, respectively.

Point Spread

Also known as the spread, puck line (in hockey), run line (in baseball), or handicap (in soccer), the point spread is all about betting on point/goal variation. Here’s an example of a point spread bet for the NHL match between the Edmonton Oilers and Golden Knights:

  • Oilers: -1.5 (+130)
  • Golden Knights: +1.5 (-155)

In this example, the Oilers are the favourites but will struggle to cover the spread. To win the bet, the Oilers must outscore Golden Knights by at least 1.5 pucks, like in a 3-1 or 4-2 scoreline.

You’ll win $130 from a $100 bet. If Golden Knights lose by less than 1.5 pucks, like in a 4-3 or 1-0 score, you can win against the spread (ATS). This bet will pay $100 from a $155 bet.

Total (Over/Under)

Also known as the Over/Under bet, the total market involves betting on the combined or aggregate scoreline. Here’s an example of a total bet for the MLB match between the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners:

  • Over 7.5: -103
  • Under 7.5: -113

In this example, the bookmakers have set a 7.5 threshold for the total runs. If the game results in more than 7.5 (eight or more) runs, like in a 10-8 score, you’ll win the Over bet, which pays $100 from a $103 stake.

Meanwhile, if the game yields less than 7.5 (seven or fewer) runs, like in a 4-3 score, you win the Under bet, which pays $100 from a $113 stake.

Over/Under bets can also be found in props, such as betting on whether a soccer player will score more or less than 1.5 goals in a match.

Props and Futures

Yukon sports betting sites offer prop bets, which involve wagering on minor outcomes within a match. An example is betting on how many points or rebounds an NBA player will make or the number of corner kicks, penalty kicks, or yellow cards a soccer match will produce.

Each sport has unique player props and match props you can bet on. Bookmakers also provide futures, which involve betting on a future outcome. Technically, all pre-match bets are futures because they’re played at a future date.

However, bookmakers reserve the term for obvious futures, like who will win the NBA Championship, Super Bowl or make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. Future bets take the standard odds format, so +700 on the Edmonton Oilers to win the Stanley Cup means you’ll win $700 from a $100 bet if they clinch the title.

Other Bets

Players in Yukon can explore many other bets, including eSports, virtual sports, poker series bets, politics, specials, and more. Below are popular additional bets available on leading bookmakers:

  • Esports: The eSports fanbase continues to rise, with millions tuned in for events in classic MOBA events like League of Legends, CS: GO, Dota2, and Fortnight. You can find exciting bets on eSports markets like map winners, moneyline, and futures.
  • Virtual Sports: Yukon bookmakers feature a wide range of RNG-based virtual sports games. These products rely on random number generators that provide results on emulated sports. You can bet on virtual football, soccer, basketball, tennis, etc.
  • Poker Series: The Poker Series attracts professional poker players who battle for hundreds of thousands of dollars through multiple elimination rounds. Punters can bet on players to make it through rounds, finish in the top three or win the big prize.
  • Politics: Bets on politics involve predicting the outcome of political events. You can bet on a candidate to clinch an electoral seat or back a bill to make it through Senate.

Other Types of Gambling In Yukon

Punters in Yukon can explore other gambling verticals besides sports. Bookmakers feature casino games, live dealer shows, scratchcards, poker, bingo, etc.

Below are some of the popular gambling verticals you can bet on during your time at Yukon Sportsbooks:

Casino Games - You’ll find casino betting products on nearly all Yukon sportsbooks. The casino lobby features thousands of games, sometimes as many as 10,000 unique titles.

Slots are popular, but you can also enjoy table games like blackjack, baccarat, roulette, keno, craps, solitaire, etc.

More options include bingo, scratchcards, lottery, crash games, and other card and board games. Casino games rely on RNGs and are powered by leading software providers like Pragmatic Play, Microgaming, NetEnt, Evolution Gaming, and many more.

Poker Games - Some Yukon gambling sites feature poker under casino games, but poker has consistently been recognized as a unique vertical.

You'll find various poker games, including RNG-based video poker and live dealer poker. Popular titles include Texas Hold’em, Deuces Wild, Joker Poker, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud Poker, Oasis Poker, Double Bonus Poker, and more. They offer intuitive designs with premium graphics and exciting sound effects.

Live Dealer Games - Modern casinos have made live dealer shows inseparable from classic betting products. These shows involve real-life croupiers and gambling machines like the roulette wheel and poker table.

Events are hosted at a physical studio with multiple camera angles of the croupier/dealer and the machines. Punters join via webcams and play against each other or the house. You can enjoy more immersive gameplay betting on live shows like Deal or No Deal, Monopoly, Craps, Crazy Time, etc.

How To Play Responsibly In Yukon

Responsible gambling is one of the key responsibilities of Yukon regulators and bookmakers. There are various frameworks to keep punters safe, prevent minors from betting, and offer help to those who need it. Here are some tips to help you play responsibly in Yukon:

  • Join Trustworthy Sportsbooks - Punters should stick to Yukon betting sites with a legitimate license from Malta, Kahnawake, Ontario, the UK, or other credible regulators. You can also use Sport Select.
  • Use Betting Limits - Bookmakers offer many betting limits that you can use to control how you bet. Examples include deposit limits, wagering limits, and loss limits. Use these options to avoid spending more than you planned on gambling.
  • Consider Self-Exclusion - The WCLC allows punters to self-exclude from gambling for periods ranging from six months to three years. During this time, you’ll be denied access to betting products. You can also take similar cool-off periods on offshore betting sites.
  • Seek Gambling Help - If you’re facing a gambling problem, consider getting help from existing organizations and websites offering support to players. You can find toll-free hotlines as well as extensive gambling resources to help you learn more.

Sportsbook to Avoid

Yukon punters should avoid sportsbooks that don’t align with responsible gambling. Here are some of the characteristics of sportsbooks to avoid:

  • Unlicensed Sites: Don’t play on any sports betting site without a verifiable license.
  • Breaches and Complaints: Avoid any site that has been breached or with too many complaints from players.
  • Too Many Spam Promos: Stay away from sportsbooks with too many adverts, pop-ups and spam features.
  • Delays and Glitches: Avoid slow websites that crash, glitch, or take too long to load features.

Provincial Betting Guide

We’ve focused our guide on Yukon provincial betting, but punters throughout the Western Provinces and Canada have legal betting. Each province has a locally-regulated sportsbook.

Punters can also explore offshore bookmakers like Betway, Sports Interaction, Bodog, Bet365, etc. The Western Canada Lottery Corporation provides Sport Select as the government-regulated bookmaker, with various retail shops where players can confirm their bets.

However, no law prohibits offshore sites and sports betting apps. You can check out our provincial betting guides for other Canadian provinces below:

Licensed vs. Unlicensed Sites In Yukon

Yukon sports betting features licensed and unlicensed sites. We only recommend licensed sites which refer to bookmakers with a valid, verifiable gambling license. The license isn’t necessarily from Yukon since the province is yet to start licensing third-party operators. Only Sport Select is government regulated in Yukon. Other bookmakers like Betway, Sports Interaction, and Bet365 have licenses from Ontario, Malta, the UKGC, etc. These are top regulators in the industry, with strict gambling standards for operators they license.

Unlicensed sites refer to bookmakers that offer betting products without a legitimate license. Some feature random information about their license, but punters have no way to verify them. We advise against unlicensed betting sites because you can’t tell if they’re legitimate or trustworthy.

Unlicensed sites feature unwanted experiences, such as distracting pop-ups and ads, bonuses with steep hidden wagering requirements, glitches, poor customer service, and malware. The sportsbook may also withhold your winnings for undisclosed reasons.

Here are some of the differences between licensed and unlicensed sports betting sites in Yukon:

Licensed SitesUnlicensed Sites
Have a valid betting licenseOperate without a betting license
Follow strict betting standards from their regulatorsDon’t follow any gambling standards that are enforced
Offer legitimate betting products, odds, and casino gamesYou can’t tell whether the betting products are legitimate or scam
Have payment guarantees, so punters will receive payouts on timeDon’t offer payment guarantees, so they may hold on to winnings without a valid reason

About Sport Select

The Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) and Yukon Canada oversee sports betting in Yukon. They offer Sport Select as the only government-regulated sports betting website in the area. Sport Select offers four sports, including the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB.

Punters can place their bets online but must visit a local retail shop to confirm those bets. No bonuses are available on Sport Select, and punters must be within Yukon or other Western Provinces like Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Sport Select has no welcome bonus, but you can claim one from offshore bookmakers. To claim your sign-up bonus, navigate to the bookmaker’s promotions/bonus page and find the welcome offer. Read the terms and conditions to determine how to claim. Some bonuses are claimed when signing up for an account, while others are available when making your first deposit. You’ll need to opt in.
