The Toronto Blue Jays are one of the 30 teams participating in the MLB and the only one from Canada. The Jays compete in the American League East where rivalries abound as they go up against historic teams like the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

It’s always tough to bet on the Toronto Blue Jays odds to win the division because it’s always so competitive, but here are their odds to top the AL East in 2023 as well as the Blue Jays betting odds of winning the World Series this season.

How to Bet on Toronto Blue Jays?

To help guide you on a successful sports betting path during this MLB season, we’ve broken down and explained some of the most important elements of sports betting to ensure you understand all of the different aspects that affect a wager.

We’ll go over everything from the most common betting markets, to smart betting strategies, to Blue Jays betting trends, to how to read Blue Jays odds, and more!

Popular Blue Jays Betting Markets

There are many different ways you can bet on Blue Jays and other MLB squads, so we’re going to explain the differences between the most popular baseball betting markets you’re likely to come across.

  • Moneyline → The moneyline or straight up wager is the most simple type of bet you can make on baseball or any sport. All you’re doing here is betting on which team you think will win, and since there are no ties in baseball, it’s an either/or proposition.
  • Runline → A very popular kind of baseball bet is one that is made on the runline. The runline is baseball’s version of a point spread, but instead of changing for each matchup, the runline is generally set at 1.5 because there are fewer runs scored in baseball.

This is basically a bet on how many runs you think a team is going to win or lose by. For example, if you bet on the Blue Jays as -1.5 favorites, they need to win by two runs or more for your bet to cash. If you place a bet on the Blue Jays as +1.5 underdogs, all they have to do is just not lose by more than a single run.

  • Total → Instead of betting on the result of a game, you can bet on how many runs the teams are going to score. Totals, also called over/unders, are especially interesting when betting on Toronto Blue Jays or other MLB teams because the handicappers rely so heavily on the starting pitchers for this one.

They will set a run total for a game, for example 7.5, and you will be betting on whether you think the two teams will score over or under that number.

  • Player Props → This type of market is becoming a lot more popular recently thanks in large part to parlays (which we’ll discuss below). This is a bet that focuses on one aspect of a player’s performance in a game. Like with totals, handicappers will set a number for each prop and you’ll bet whether you think they’ll go over or under that number.

You can bet on how many runs, RBIs, hits, bases, strikeouts, walks, hits allowed, and much more for each player. You can also bet on yes/no propositions like whether a player will earn a win, a save, or hit a home run in a game.

  • Futures → This is a market for long term bettors because futures often take place across a full MLB season. If you’re going to go the futures route with your Blue Jays betting, you should know that while they offer long odds, the fact that the bets stretch over a full season makes them very difficult to win.

You can bet on things like how many wins a team will get, whether they’ll make the playoffs, whether they’ll win their division, or whether they’ll win the World Series. You can also bet on player props such as who will lead the league in each statistical category and who will win the end of year awards.

  • Parlays → One of the most popular but also the most dangerous type of bet, parlays are not to be trifled with. What you’re doing here is increasing your odds and lowering your probability of success by combining several bets together into one wager.

Each bet, called a leg, needs to win for your bet to win. While you have the chance of winning big with parlays, the fact that so many different factors need to go your way for you to win makes it a bad investment more often than not.

How to Read Toronto Blue Jays Betting Lines

Now that you know what you’re betting on with each market, it’s time to learn how to read the lines/odds that determine which markets are offering value and which are not. Low odds refer to something that is likely to happen while high odds refer to something that is unlikely.

Reading Blue Jays odds is the most crucial aspect of betting success because they communicate everything about your bet: what your potential payout would be and the implied probability of your bet’s success.

There are three main types of ways to display sports betting odds, and we’ll quickly go through all three to make sure you get a good grasp of how to read each one.

First are decimal odds, which are relatively common in Canada but most prevalent in continental Europe. Your odds are communicated in a simple decimal number that represents how much you stand to win on a $1 bet. The higher the number, the higher the payout and the lower the chances of your bet winning.

For example, if you bet on Blue Jays odds to win a game at 3.4 odds, your potential payout is $3.40 on a $1 bet, $34 on a $10 bet, $340 on a $100 bet, and so forth. The number represents your total winnings including the stake rather than your profit.

Next are fractional odds, which are not very common in North America but are extremely popular in the British Isles. The odds are represented by a fraction where the number on the right represents how much money you need to stake and the number on the left represents your potential payout.

If you divide the left number by the right number you basically get your multiplier, and the higher that multiplier, the higher your potential payout and the lower the chances of your bet winning.

The most important type of odds and the one you’ll come across most often in North America is American odds. American odds are represented by a number next to either a “-” minus symbol or a “+” plus symbol. Odds with a “-” minus symbol generally refer to a favorite or a market that has a high probability of winning. Odds with a “+” plus sign generally refer to underdogs or markets that have a lower probability of winning.

The number next to the “-” minus symbol represents how much money you’d need to stake to win $100. The number next to the “+” plus symbol represents how much money you’d make off a $100 bet. For example, if you bet on Blue Jays odds to win at -150, a $150 bet would win you $100, but if the Blue Jays odds were at +200, a $100 bet would net you $200.

How to Get the Most out of Toronto Blue Jays Betting Lines

Now that you have a strong grasp about what odds/lines mean and how to read and understand them, let’s talk about how you can get the most out of the Blue Jays odds you come across. The best way to do this is to employ a strategy called “shopping lines.”

Shopping lines refers to the act of checking out many different sportsbooks when you’re looking to make a bet so that you can compare the odds each sports betting app is offering on the market you want to bet on. While the odds won’t skew too heavily, there are often big enough differences to make the strategy worthwhile if you employ it on a consistent basis.

For example, if you want to bet on the Blue Jays odds to win a game against the Yankees and your sportsbook has their odds at -180, you could surf around and possibly find other Canadian betting sites that are offering -165 or -150 odds, thereby imbuing your bet with a lot more value.

Toronto Blue Jays Betting Strategy

You now know and understand all of the basics when it comes to Blue Jays betting, but all of that important info doesn’t mean much if you don’t come into things with something of a plan or strategy.

To help get the ball rolling for you, we’ve quickly listed three of our favorite MLB and Blue Jays betting strategies.

  • Check The Forecast → Weather not only has the power to delay or postpone a baseball game, it can affect one that does take place pretty significantly.

We’re talking wind here rather than rain, however. When the wind is blowing in at 5 mph or higher, unders hit at about a 55 percent rate, while if the wind is blowing out at 8 mph or higher, overs hit at about a 53 percent clip. Wind blowing in turns home runs into fly ball outs while wind blowing out turns fly balls into home runs.

  • Divisional Dogs → Like in any sport, teams in the same division play one another more often throughout the season in the MLB than they do other teams.

That means they’re much more familiar with one another which gives underdogs more value than they would in non-divisional games. Rivalry games are always played tightly, so the dogs in those situations are usually offering a lot of value.

  • Stay Away From Big Favorites → If you want to bet on a team’s moneyline at -150 or higher you may want to think twice. When a big favorite like that wins, your payout is pretty small, and when they lose, you lose what was supposed to be a sure thing. Chalk that gets too chalky just isn’t worth the price of admission at the end of the day.

Toronto Blue Jays Betting Trends

Teams have played between 105 and 115 games, so we’re starting to get an idea of who are the contenders and who are the pretenders here.

The Blue Jays are a solid 60-50 so far, but let’s dive a little deeper to see if we can find any useful betting trends for Canada’s team.

  • They have a 5-5 record at home over their last 10 games
  • As an away underdog they’re 11-10 in 2023
  • At 30-24, the Jays are tied for 11th best home record in the MLB
  • They have a 10-9 record since the All-Star game
  • Toronto has been awful against the AL East, going 8-23 so far

MLB Format Explained

Each MLB season starts with a few weeks of spring training before the regular season gets underway. This year the campaign started with all 30 teams playing on March 30th to open the season, which consists of 162 games played over the course of six months.

The MLB’s 30 teams are divided into two leagues of 15 teams, the American League and the National League. The AL and NL are further broken up into three divisions of five teams apiece, with each league having an East, West, and Central Division. The Toronto Blue Jays play in the AL East alongside the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and Baltimore Orioles.

Teams play divisional opponents 52 times, non-divisional league opponents 64 times, and teams in the opposite league 46 times. At the end of the regular season 12 teams from each league advance to the postseason bracket-style tournament.

The two division winners in each league with the best record will receive first round byes, with the third best division winner playing the worst Wild Card team, and the best and second best Wild Card teams facing off in a three-game Wild Card series.

The winners advance to the Divisional Series where they play in a best of five, followed by the League Championship Series where they play in a best of seven, followed by the World Series, where the last remaining teams from the AL and NL meet to crown the champion in another best of seven.

Most Important Betting Features

There are a lot of ingredients that go into making a good sportsbook, so we’ll take you through some of the most crucial ones so you can decide which features are important to you and which ones you don’t really care about. Sports betting is all about creating the ideal situation for you.

  • Live Betting → Live betting allows bettors to make bets on a variety of markets after the game has already started. This is a great way to bet if you have a hunch about how a game will progress based on performance, injury, etc.
  • Live Streaming → Nearly every sportsbook offers live streaming for various sporting events, but not many of them are streaming the top sports and leagues such as the MLB. You can often find live streams for horse racing, e-sports, and other fringe sports, however.
  • Early Cashout → This feature allows bettors to cash out a portion of their potential winnings before the bet is complete. This allows bettors whose bets are not looking good to get a portion of their stake back or bettors whose bets are winning to take a portion of their winnings to ensure they get something out of the bet.
  • Same Game Parlay → All sportsbooks don’t yet offer the same game parlays but they are usually a sign of a top notch sportsbook. This feature allows bettors to build a bet with several markets and/or props from a single game.

How We Rank our Sportsbooks

Every bettor has their own preferences when it comes to which sportsbooks they want to throw in with, so to ensure you understand our process, we’ve put together a short list of the most significant aspects of a sportsbook from our point of view.

  • Banking Methods → One of the most crucial factors in choosing a good sportsbook for you is to ensure that their banking options jive with your preferred method of online banking. If you can’t get any money into your account, there’s not much point in signing up, right? Also, be on the lookout for fees as well, you don’t want to have to pay extra to deposit or withdraw.
  • Blue Jays/MLB Coverage/Odds → Since we’re talking about bettors who want to get their betting done on the MLB and the Blue Jays, another big factor is the sportsbook’s variety of Blue Jays betting markets as well as how bettor-friendly their MLB odds are. You want a sportsbook that offers a lot of betting options for the sport you intend to do your betting on.
  • Bonuses/Promotions → One of the biggest reasons to join more than one sportsbook apart from shopping lines is to take advantage of more bonuses and promotions. You can generally expect a pretty generous sign up bonus, but the best bookmakers separate themselves by offering free bets, odds boosts, and more on a regular basis. Ensure they’re offering these bonuses for MLB games as well.
  • Mobile Capability → Everything is on the go in this day and age, and sports betting is no different. Most of the top sportsbooks have a mobile app by now, but not all sports betting apps are created equal so make sure to try out the app first before you lock yourself in.
  • Additional Features → After that, it’s all about what is more important to you. You might want more high-performance live betting options, you might want a sportsbook that offers same game parlays, or maybe you want one that has a user-friendly interface. In the end, it’s all about bettor preference.

About the Toronto Blue Jays

Now that we’ve covered everything on the betting side of things, it’s time to take a little bit of a closer look at the team we all love, the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays have been the one and only Canadian team in the MLB since 2004, when the Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals.

In 2023, the Jays are being led by some familiar faces at the plate including Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, and Bo Bichette, who’s had his best start to a season so far. On the mound, Jose Berrios and Yusei Kikuchi have been leading the way through the half of the campaign.

Blue Jays Betting FAQs

To finish off our Blue Jays betting guidelines and ensure we’ve covered all of our bases, we’ve cobbled together a list of the most commonly posed questions about sports betting, baseball betting, and Blue Jays betting and provided succinct answers.

Is it legal to bet on the MLB in Canada?

Yes it is legal to bet on the MLB just like every other sports league. However, each province has different restrictions so you can’t make an account in one province and use it to bet somewhere else unfortunately. All you need to do is ensure the sportsbook you choose is licensed and regulated by the proper authorities.

Have the Blue Jays ever won the World Series?

Yes, the Toronto Blue Jays have won two World Series titles in their 46 years in the MLB since their founding in 1977. The Jays actually won back-to-back World Series in 1992 and 1993 during their glory days of the late 1980s-early 1990s.

Where should I bet on the Blue Jays?

You can bet on the Blue Jays at any reputable sportsbook operating in Canada, but we would suggest going with one of the five premier options we laid out here in our Blue Jays betting guidelines.

Who hit the most home runs for the Blue Jays?

Former first baseman Carlos Delgado holds the Toronto Blue Jays franchise record with 336 home runs in 1,423 games over 12 seasons. Delgado also holds the franchise records for doubles (343), runs (889), RBIs (1,058), walks (827) and much more.

What is the runline?

The runline is baseball’s equivalent to the NBA and NFL’s point spread and the NHL’s puckline, meaning it’s a bet on how much a team will win by. It’s always set at 1.5 and offers bettors the chance to bet on big-time favorites with more reasonable odds or big-time underdogs with more reasonable probability.
