Legal Betting In Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is an Atlantic Province, along with New Brunswick (NB), Newfoundland and Labrador (N.L), and Nova Scotia. The Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) or Loto Atlantique regulates gambling in the region.

ALC allows punters throughout PEI to bet on real money sports through the Pro-Line platform. Pro-Line is locally governed, and PEI doesn’t have a framework to license private betting brands like Ontario.

However, punters are free to join offshore betting brands like Betway, Sports Interaction, Bodog, Bet365, and more. These sportsbooks are licensed outside PEI but offer legitimate betting opportunities. PEI punters can place parlays and single-game bets and have access to the usual betting products. Whether you love football, hockey, combat sports, horse racing, or eSports, bookmakers in the region have extensive coverage for all major sports.

Is Sports Betting Legal In Prince Edward Island?

Yes. Sports betting in Prince Edward Island is legal for any punter above 19. The Atlantic Lottery Corporation was the first to introduce legal betting in Canada. Punters in PEI can bet on all kinds of sports, including major leagues like the NFL, CFL, MLB, NBA, MLS, ATP/WTA, UFC, and more. You can also wager on casino and live dealer casino games, as well as lotteries, scratchcards, bingo and more.

Sports betting is available through Pro-Line, which is locally regulated, and offshore betting brands. All forms of gambling in the region are governed by the ALC, and punters can place bets online via mobile phones. Canada allows individual provinces to make their gambling laws. PEI used this opportunity to legalize all forms of gambling, including single-game bets and parlays.

Why Legalize Single-Game Sports Betting?

Single-game/event betting became legal in Canada in August 2021 when Bill C-218 received royal assent from the Chief Justice. Before that, punters could only place parlay bets. A parlay involves having two or more selections on the same bet slip. For instance, you can bet on the Raptors to win an NBA match and their game to result in over 225 points. In single-game betting, you can only have one outcome on the slip.

Single-game betting has less risk, so punters have a better chance of winning cash. As such, more punters fled to offshore betting platforms in search of single bets until 2021, when the Criminal Code was amended to accommodate the option in Canada. Before the legalization, Canada lost billions of dollars in gambling revenue. However, the country has seen a boost in gambling revenue after all provinces legalized single-game bets following the passing of Bill C-218, which allowed provinces to legalize the betting option.

Which Are Steps Taken To Legalize Single-Game Betting?

Single-game betting officially became legal in Prince Edward Island in August 2021, on the date the Canadian government approved it. ALC made single-game bets legal throughout the Atlantic Provinces on August 27. However, the outcome followed a series of events, including two failed attempts. Here are all the key dates and steps taken to legalize single-game betting in Prince Edward Island:

  • 1892: Canada introduces the first legislation (Criminal Code) banning all forms of sports betting apart from horse racing and small carnival bets.
  • 1969: The Criminal Code is amended as Bill-150 is passed to legalize lotteries.
  • 1985: Further amendment of the Criminal Code introduces computers, slot machines, and video devices, as well as parlay bets on sports events.
  • The 1990s to the 2000s: Sports betting is available throughout Canada, mostly via retail outlets and offshore brands.
  • 2012: Bill C-290 is introduced to legalize single-game bets. It passed the House of Commons but failed in the Senate in 2015.
  • 2016: Another bill is introduced and passes the House of Commons but fails in the Senate.
  • February 2020: MP Kevin Waugh introduces Bill C-218 to legalize single-game betting. Conservative senator David Wells supports the bill.
  • April 2021: Bill C-218 passes the House of Commons.
  • June 2021: Bill C-218 is voted by Senate. It receives royal assent from the Chief Justice later that month.
  • August 2021: August 27 is set as the date when single-game bets become legal throughout Canada. ALC legalizes single-event bets on the same day.

What Does Single-Game Betting Include?

Single-game sports betting in Prince Edward Island isn’t any different from other Canadian provinces. It simply refers to placing bets involving one outcome on your bet slip. For instance, you can bet on the Toronto Raptors to win their match against the Chicago Bulls.

This is called a moneyline bet. You can also stake on the team to cover the spread or a given player to win the MVP player of the season future. A single bet has a lower risk since you only need to make one prediction.

What’s In The Future of PEI Sports Betting?

Prince Edward Island sports betting is limited to Pro-Line and offshore betting brands like Sports Interaction, Bet365, Bodog, Betway, Bwin, etc.

We don’t see the province opening its doors to third-party brands like Ontario has done. However, private operators may be able to obtain a PEI license in the future when such frameworks are available. As things stand, punters can still enjoy offshore brands without any restrictions.

Note that betting sites like BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetRivers aren’t available in PEI or Canadian provinces other than Ontario. They only operate where they’re licensed.

Who Can Bet on Sports in Prince Edward Island?

Sports Betting in Prince Edward Island is legal for any eligible punter. You must be at least 19 and not be self-excluded from Canadian bookmakers.

Some sportsbooks, like the locally-regulated Pro-Line, restrict betting to punters physically present in PEI. Others don’t have such restrictions. Here’s an overview of the limits to consider when betting in PEI:

  • Age Limits: All forms of sports betting in PEI are restricted to players above 19 years of age. This restriction prevents minors from joining or betting on the platform. They also ensure all punters are adults with verifiable identities.
  • Location Restrictions: Betting on Pro-Line is restricted to those physically present in Prince Edward Island and other Atlantic Provinces. Offshore betting brands accept players from Canada, the UK, the US, and many other jurisdictions.
  • Mobile Betting: Punters in PEI can bet on sports using mobile phones. Nearly all bookmakers have fully optimized websites that work smoothly across Android and iOS devices. Some also have sleek betting apps you can install on your device for instant access to sports bets.
  • Retail Betting: Prince Edward Island doesn’t provide any retail sports betting outlets, so you can’t place in-person bets in the province. Such bets are only available in ALC retail shops. However, you can place bets online and don’t need in-person confirmation.
  • Tax Laws: Prince Edward Island and the ALC don’t impose any taxes on gambling winnings. The same law applies throughout Canada. Gambling winnings are tax-free in the country, meaning punters can keep 100% of their bankroll.
  • Self-Exclusion: Players can voluntarily join a self-exclusion program available in the different sportsbooks. Pro-Line allows punters to take breaks of six months to three years and can extend their self-exclusion if they desire. Offshore brands also offer various frameworks to take breaks from gambling.
  • ID Verification: To place bets and withdraw funds from PEI sportsbooks, you must verify your ID details. This involves uploading your ID, driving license, utility bill, or other documents that verify your name and address.

Offshore Sportsbooks In Prince Edward Island?

Pro-Line is the only locally-regulated bookmaker in PEI. You can also find Prince Edward betting sites with offshore licenses. These bookmakers have licenses from Ontario AGCO, Malta Gaming Authority, the UK Gambling Commission, Kahnawake Gambling Commission, and other credible regulators.

They're not licensed in PEI but welcome punters from the province and other Canadian provinces. Leading offshore betting brands include Betway, Bodog, Sports Interaction, Bet365, Bwin, etc.

No law prohibits PEI punters from joining offshore sportsbooks. However, the bookmakers can't actively promote their products and bonuses to PEI punters as they do in Ontario and other jurisdictions where they're licensed.

How to Start Betting In Prince Edward Island

To start betting on sports in Prince Edward Island, you’ll need to find a reputable sportsbook allowed to offer its products in the province. You can then sign up for an account, fund it, and explore your markets.

We recommend reviewing the welcome bonus to determine if it’s worth claiming. Here are all the steps you need to start betting in Prince Edward Island:

  1. Select A Sportsbook - To get started with PEI sports betting, you need to register an account. First, you’ll need to select a sportsbook. We recommend Sports Interaction, Bodog, Betway, Bet365, Bwin, 888sport, etc.

Look for licensed bookmakers with top-notch security, generous bonuses, comprehensive sports coverage, exceptional support, and other perks. You can also try the locally-regulated Pro-Line product, although it has many limitations and fewer sports, markets, and promos compared to offshore brands.
  2. Sign Up For An Account - Once you select a sportsbook, you can sign up for a free account. Simply click the button that says SIGN UP, REGISTER, JOIN NOW, CREATE ACCOUNT, or something similar.

It’s usually next to the LOGIN button. Next, enter your details (name, email, phone number, address, date of birth, etc.) to register your new account. Check if you need to opt into the welcome bonus during the sign-up phase. Enter accurate/honest details since you must verify them when making your first withdrawal.
  3. Deposit Funds To Your Account - You can deposit funds to start betting now that you have an account. PEI bookmakers support standard payment methods, including credit and debit cards, digital wallets, prepaid cards, cryptocurrencies, bank transfers, checks, and more.

Popular payment options include VISA, MasterCard, Interac, Neosurf, ecoPayz, Bank Transfer, InstaDebit, iDebit, MuchBetter, Jeton, Trustly, etc. You can also use Apple Pay, Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, Tether, and many more. Simply navigate to the cashier section, click deposit, and follow the bookmaker's prompts to fund your account.
  4. Find Markets To Bet On - Once you have funds in your account, you can launch the sports tab and find events to bet on. PEI sportsbooks offer comprehensive sports coverage, so you’ll find all popular sports and markets.

Simply select the sport, tournament, and event you want to bet on. Next, click the odds next to the betting market you choose to place your bet. You can place single-game bets or build parlays involving multiple bets.
  5. Bet, Win, Withdraw - To bet, make your selection or selections if you’re building a parlay. A bet slip will be generated automatically, indicating your selections. Once you’re done, set the stake and submit your bet slip.

Some bookmakers offer parlay boosts, so you’ll earn more if you have multiple selections. After submitting your slip, wait for the bets to be settled. You can also explore betting features like live streaming and early cashout. The last step is to withdraw your winnings if you made correct predictions.

Most Popular Markets

Prince Edward Island sports betting platforms offer access to the same markets available in other Canadian provinces. You can bet on traditional and contemporary markets across different sports. Here’s an overview of popular markets and odd formats you should know about:

Moneyline

The moneyline bet is one of the popular markets you’ll encounter across Canadian betting sites. It refers to a wager placed on who will win the match. Here’s an example of an NBA moneyline market in the game between the Raptors and the Bulls:

  • Raptors: -220
  • Bulls: +440

The plus (+) and minus (-) signs denote the underdog and favourites, respectively. The Raptors is the favourite, so backing them to win will pay $100 from a $220 bet. The Bulls is the underdog, and backing them will get you $440 from a $100 stake.

Spread

Also known as the point spread, run line (baseball), or puck line (hockey), the spread involves betting on score variation. Here’s an example of an NHL spread bet for a match between Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs:

  • Oilers: +1.5 (-205)
  • Maple Leafs: -1.5 (+115)

Maple Leafs are the favourites, and backing them means they must score at least 1.5 (two or more) pucks/goals than the Oilers to cover the spread. If they do, you’ll get $125 from a $100 bet. You can also bet against the spread (ATS), in which case the Oilers must not lose by more than 1.5 (1 or less) pucks/goals. If they win, draw, or lose by 1 goal, you’ll win $100 from a $115 bet.

Total

The total bet is also known as the over/under bet, and involves wagering on the score combination/aggregate. Here’s an example of the total bet in the MLS match between Toronto FC and Inter Miami:

  • Over 2.5: +110
  • Under 2.5: -140

In this example, you can win $110 from a $100 bet if the match results in more than 2.5 (three or more) goals if you back the Over bet. An example is a 2-1 or 4-0 scoreline. Meanwhile, you can win $100 from a $140 bet if the game results in less than 2.5 (2 or less) goals if you back the Under bet. An example is a 2-0, 1-1, or 1-0 scoreline.

Props and Futures

Props refer to small outcomes within an event. Examples include how many rebounds an NBA player will have in a match if an NHL team will score the first puck, or how many corners a soccer match will produce.

You’ll find various props and exotics in different sports. Futures are bets placed on future outcomes, so every pre-match bet can be considered a future.

However, PEI sportsbooks and bookmakers in general use futures to describe events in the far future. Examples include who will make it to the NHL playoffs or win the Stanley Cup or who walks away as the MVP player of the NBA season.

Props and futures take on standard formats. For instance, +2000 on the Toronto Raptors to win the 2024 NBA Championship means you’ll win $2,000 from a $100 bet if the Raptors clinch the title.

Other Bets

PEI sports betting websites offer many other betting options besides conventional sports disciplines. You can bet on eSports, virtual sports, politics, carnival events, and more. Here are some of the interesting bets you can explore on legitimate PEI bookmakers:

  • Esports: Involves betting on video game competitions like League of Legends, Dota2, FIFA, Counter-Strike: Global Offence, etc. They offer unique markets like the moneyline, MAP winner, futures, and props.
  • Virtual Sports: You can wager on many virtual sports like football, basketball, hockey, wrestling, tennis, etc. Virtual sports rely on random number generators (RNGs) like slots and other casino games.
  • Politics: Some bookmakers offer betting opportunities for political events. You can wager on who wins an election or if a bill will pass through the Senate.

Other Types Of Gambling In Prince Edward Island

Punters in Prince Edward Island can bet on various products other than sports. Leading bookmakers cover popular verticals, such as casinos, live dealer games, bingo, lotteries, scratchcards, and more. Below are some of the popular alternatives to Prince Edward Island sports betting:

Casino Gambling: Nearly all leading PEI betting sites feature a dedicated casino section offering thousands of games from leading software providers. How to Play Responsible In Prince Edward Island

Sports betting is exciting and potentially rewarding, but you also risk losing money and developing a habit. Prince Edward Island and the ALC have various responsible gambling frameworks to help punters bet responsibly and escape gambling problems. Here’s how to bet responsible in PEI:

  • Betting Limits: You can set betting limits to regulate how much you deposit, bet, and the time you spend on a betting website. Other limitations include how much you lose. Betting limits prevent you from spending more time, funds, or effort on gambling.
  • Self-Exclusion: You can self-exclude from the Pro-Line product to stay away from gambling for at least six months to three years. Offshore betting brands also feature cool-off periods and other self-exclusion products to keep you from betting for a specific duration. Self-exclusion is voluntary.
  • Gambling Support: The Atlantic Lottery Commission and the PEI Lottery Commission offer gambling resources and support options to help punters with a problem. You can use their resources to find help or learn more about responsible betting, gambling harm, privacy, legal betting, and other topics.

Sportsbook to Avoid

Besides responsible gambling tools, punters should learn how to spot legitimate and illegitimate websites. Avoid any sportsbook with the following characteristics:

  • No License: Don’t sign up or bet using any bookmaker without a verifiable betting license.
  • Frequent Security Breaches: Bookmakers that have been breached before are not worth joining.
  • Spam and Ads: Avoid sites with spammy ads, feeds, and pop-ups that disrupt your betting.
  • Glitches & Delays: If the site is slow, not responsive, or glitches too often, find a better alternative.
  • Customer Complaints: Don’t sign up or bet using any website with many customer complaints.

Provincial Betting Guide

Our review focuses on Prince Edward Island sports betting, but all Canadian provinces have legal gambling. You can bet using locally-regulated bookmakers or offshore brands like Betway, Bodog, Bet365, Sports Interaction, etc.

Ontario is the only province that licenses private operators, so sites like Betway, SIA, BetMGM, FanDuel, etc., have a legitimate iGO license.

Other regions don’t license third-party brands but have local websites and retail shops. However, they don’t prohibit punters from joining offshore websites. Check out our list below to find betting information for each Canadian province and territory:

Licensed Vs Unlicensed Sites In Prince Edward Island

Whether you fancy online websites or sports betting apps, you’ll encounter licensed and unlicensed bookmakers. The term licensed refers to sports betting operators with a legitimate gambling license from a known regulator.

For instance, Sports Interaction has a license from Ontario AGCO. Betway and Bet365 are also licensed in Ontario, as well as Malta and the UK. However, none of these sites are licensed in Prince Edward Island or other Canadian provinces because the jurisdictions accept private operators.

An unlicensed sportsbook operates without a verifiable license. You shouldn’t trust these websites since there’s no way to prove if they’re legitimate gambling destinations. Here are more distinctions between licensed and unlicensed Prince |Edward Island betting sites:

Licensed SitesUnlicensed Sites
Operate with a verifiable gambling license from PEI, Ontario, Malta, the UK, Kahnawake, Curacao, the US, or other jurisdictions.Operate without a verifiable gambling license, and feature no information about licensing on their websites.
Have legitimate betting products from the best odds and game providers. There’s no way to determine if the betting products and casino games are from legitimate providers.
Offer secure betting experiences designed according to the gambling standards required by their licensors.Have security concerns since they don’t follow any known gambling standards enforced by credible regulators.
Punters can be sure of receiving their gambling winnings when they make correct predictions. The bookmaker may refuse to pay winnings on unverifiable terms, and there’s no way to hold them accountable.
