What Is the PGA Championship?

The PGA Championship is one of the four major tournaments on the PGA Tour circuit. It used to take place in mid-August the week before Labour Day Weekend, serving as the fourth and final major of the year and a sort of bookend to the season. It now takes place in mid-May as the second major of the campaign following the Masters, which is contested in April.

The tournament, which is generally referred to as the US PGA Championship or the USPGA outside of America, is often played at a course in the Eastern United States, especially in New York, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, though there have been a few exceptions over the years.

Having first taken place in 1916, the PGA Championship is the third-oldest of the four majors, more senior only than the Masters. Winning the PGA Championship also has many privileges that come with it: winners are automatically invited to the subsequent Players Championship, US Open, British Open, Masters, and PGA Championship for the next calendar year, are eligible for the PGA Championship for life, and automatically receive membership on the PGA Tour for the next five years.

How to Bet on the PGA Championship

If you want to learn how to win big betting on PGA golf, you have come to the right place. There are many contributing factors that go into successful PGA golf betting, including which bookmaker you choose to bet with, what kind of betting markets you choose to wager on, and what kind of betting strategies you’ve put into effect.

The simplest but most crucial part of this is searching through the many betting sites in Canada to find the one that suits you best. After that you need to sign up with your preferred golf betting apps.

Simply find the sign up or register button, which is usually near the top of the homepage, input all of your personal information, and voila, you’ve got an account. After that, all you have to do is connect a banking method to your account to fund it, then you’re off to the PGA golf betting races!

What to Look For in Golf Betting Sites

There’s a lot to consider when you set off on the odyssey that is choosing a sportsbook for golf betting PGA. To help make the decision easier on you, we’ve listed a few of the most important factors that we’ve encountered over the years in separating a good golf sportsbook from a bad one.

  • PGA Golf Coverage → If you’re only signing up with a sportsbook to bet on PGA golf, one of the first things you should look into is how dedicated that sportsbook is to the sport. Different sportsbooks have different specialties, so while some may offer a ton of options for NBA or NFL, they might have limited options for golf. Another important thing here is to consider the PGA golf betting odds being offered and compare them to other sportsbooks to see which ones are offering the most value.
  • Banking Methods → There’s no betting without a secure link between your banking method and your account with an online sportsbook. You need funds to make bets, and if you sign up with a sportsbook that doesn’t accept your preferred method of payment, you’re kind of stuck. You also want to ensure that even if that sportsbook does work with your banking method, that they’re not charging you any additional fees.
  • Golf-Related Bonuses → Another big factor in which golf betting site you’re going to join is to take a good look at what kinds of bonuses and promotions they offer that are directly related to the PGA Championship tournament. Good gold betting sites will likely offer at least one free bet during the tournament as well as odds boosts on various markets.

Common PGA Golf Betting Markets

Like with any sport, there are a ton of different betting options if you want to do some betting on PGA golf, as long as you’ve chosen the right bookmaker. To help give you a better idea of what to expect in terms of betting markets, we’ve broken down a few of the most popular here.

  • Outright → This is a simple bet on who you think will finish atop the leaderboard and win the PGA Championship.
  • Outright Each-Way → This is a similar bet to the outright, except it’s two bets in one. When you make an outright each way bet, you’re making one bet on your golfer to win outright, but you’re also making a secondary bet for that golfer to finish in the top five at one quarter of the odds that golfer has to win outright.
  • Top Nationality → Because golf is such a global game with athletes from all corners of the world, a popular bet is to wager on which golfer will finish with the best score among players from that country. For example you can bet on the top British finisher, the top finisher from Asia, from America, and many more.
  • Make The Cut → This is a simple bet on whether a golfer will make the cut and earn the right to play on Saturday and Sunday. Generally about half of the golfers in the field make the cut for any given tournament, including the PGA Championship.
  • Hole In One → A wager on whether or not any player will hit a hole in one at any point during the PGA Championship.
  • Top 5/10 Finish → A bet on whether a golfer will finish in the top five by tournament's end, similarly you can bet on whether they’ll finish in the top 8 or top 10 as well.
  • Round Leader → Here, you’re betting on who will finish a particular round of the PGA Championship with the best score.

Proven PGA Golf Betting Strategies

It’s always good to go into things with a plan or strategy, and that’s true if you want to have success betting on PGA golf. To get you off on the right foot, we’ve listed and broken down a few of our favorite and most reliable PGA golf betting strategies below.

  • Who’s Hot → Just like any other sport, golfers go through hot streaks and cold spells. The first thing you should do when looking to do some betting on PGA golf is to check out the recent results for the top contenders and see who’s been playing better in recent weeks and months. It’s the first thing handicappers look at when setting the odds, so use that to color your betting decisions.
  • Who Likes This Course → No golf courses are created equal, so there are different courses that fit better with different golfers’ skill sets. A course with long and wide fairways is a better fit for someone who has a strong drive. A narrower course with more hazards similarly benefits more accurate but less powerful drivers. A course with particularly tricky greens will give the advantage to those with elite putting games.
  • Get In Early → Odds can vary wildly from when they are first put up on the board to when the tournament actually starts. Because of this, you want to get your bets in early so you can take advantage of better odds before the oddsmakers reduce them as the tournament approaches and more people bet on the top golfers.

2024 PGA Championship Recap

The 105th playing of the PGA Championship took place from May 18th to May 21st 2023 on the East Course of Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, New York, which has now hosted four PGA Championships as well as three U.S. Opens. The course is 70-par and stretches 7,394 yards long. The total purse for the tournament was $17.5 million, with the winner taking home a tidy sum of $3.15 million.

In 2023, the winner was Brooks Koepka, who had already won two PGA Championships and two U.S. Opens in his career, giving him an impressive five major tournament wins since 2017. Koepka had come into the tournament fourth on the odds chart at +800, behind only Scottie Scheffler (who finished two strokes behind Koepka in second) at +130, Viktor Hovland at +400 (finished tied with Scheffler), and Corey Connors at +650.

Koepka did not start the tournament out well, finishing the first round outside the top 10 with a 72. He locked in after that though, shooting 66 on Friday, 66 on Saturday, and 67 on the final day to secure the title.

Recent PGA Championship Winners

With the win, Koepka became just the third golfer after Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus to win three PGA Championships in the stroke-play era and just the 20th golfer to win five majors in his career. Below is a list of the other PGA Championship winners since the turn of the century.

Breaking Down the PGA Tour’s 4 Majors

In much the same way as professional tennis, there is a tournament almost every weekend during the PGA Tour season, but the four majors are the ones that everyone comes to see and everyone wants to win.

They offer prestige and legacy, but also offer the largest purses for the players as well. Here’s a quick breakdown of each of the four majors in the PGA Tour’s schedule.

  • The Masters → Despite the fact that it is by far the newest of the four majors, having been founded in 1934, the Masters has always held a certain reverence to it. With Jim Nantz calling the shots in April, the players swinging away at historical Augusta National in Georgia, the last year’s winner putting the Green Jacket on the new year’s winner, and the winner’s interview at Butler Cabin; it truly is a tradition like no other.

  • PGA Championship → Founded in 1916, the PGA Championship is generally played at a course in the Eastern United States in Mid-May. Of the four majors, it is probably the least venerated despite having been played over 100 times. Tiger Woods, current champ Brooks Koepka, and Jack Nicklaus are all tied for the most PGA Championship wins with three apiece.

  • U.S. Open → The third major of the season is generally played some time in June and takes place at an American course that places a premium on accurate driving. Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus share the record for most U.S. Open victories at four apiece.

  • The Open Championship → The most celebrated and respected tournament on the entire PGA Tour, the Open Championship, also called the British Open, is also the oldest golf tournament in the entire world, having debuted in 1860. It is also generally played at the oldest golf course in the world, the Old Course at St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. The current champion is Australia’s Cameron Smith, and Harry Vardon holds the record for most victories with six, the last of which came in 1914.

PGA Championship Golf Betting FAQs

When is the PGA Championship played?

The PGA Championship used to serve as the fourth and final major of the PGA Tour season in August, but since 2019 it has been moved to mid-May, now serving as the second major of the calendar year.

Who won the last PGA Championship?

Palm Beach, Florida native Brooks Koepka won it most recently in 2023. It was his third time winning the tournament, which tied him for the record with two legends of the game: Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

Is it legal to bet on golf in Canada?

Yes it is legal to bet on golf or any other sport in Canada. The only caveat is that you have to ensure the sportsbook you’re dealing with is licensed and registered with the proper authorities, which change from province to province. A betting account created in one province is barred from making bets while you’re physically in another province, however.

Where’s the best place to bet on golf in Canada?

In Canada, there are a wide range of places to bet on golf nowadays, but we believe the best of the best are the half dozen we have listed above, especially BetVictor, which is one of the only sportsbooks that offers live streaming of major PGA events.

What are the majors in golf?

Majors are the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour, bringing in exponentially more money and viewers and buzz than the lesser tournaments. There are four of them: the Masters in Georgia, USA in April, the PGA Championship in Eastern USA in May, the U.S. Open somewhere in the USA in June, and the British Open at St Andrews in Scotland in July.

Where is the PGA Championship played?

Unlike the Masters, which is contested at the same course every year, the PGA Championship moves around with each passing season, though the course that is chosen is generally one in the Eastern United States. 13 of the past 24 tournaments have taken place at courses in either New York, North Carolina, Wisconsin, or Minnesota.
