Betsafe launched in Ontario as Betsson AB joins Ontario sports betting market

Reports by iGaming Ontario have shown the growth of the betting market in Ontario. In 2022, iGaming Ontario reported 18 operators and 31 gaming websites in the province from April 4 to June 30. The number of operators increased to 36 by Dec. 30 and the number of gaming websites increased to 68, according to iGaming Ontario’s market performance report. Betsson AB is one of the most recent companies to join the market.

Betsson AB will offer sports betting in Ontario through its Betsafe website and app, according to a press release.  Betsson acquired operator and supplier licenses for online gaming in Ontario the company announced on Tuesday. In the press release, Betsson AB’s president and CEO talked about his company’s optimism about the future of sports betting in Ontario.

Ontario’s Sports Betting Landscape

“We are pleased to obtain the necessary licenses to operate with both a B2C and B2B offering in the locally regulated online gaming market in Ontario. We are convinced that there are great opportunities for Betsson in Ontario in both the B2C and B2B channels as we bring a highly competitive offering to the market,” Betsson AB president and CEO Pontus Lindwall said. The company is hoping to capitalize on the Ontario market. In the press release, the company said Ontario is “widely expected to become one of the largest (online gaming markets) in North America.”

Ontarians wagered $11.53 billion overall from Oct. 1 to December 31 in 2022, according to a report by iGaming Ontario. There were 910,000 active player accounts during that period, according to the report. The iGaming report states the average amount of money spent by each account was $167 per month.

Betsafe Becomes the 28th iGaming Operator

Betsafe is one of 28 iGaming Ontario regulated sports betting websites, according to the list on iGaming Ontario’s website. Betsson AB claims to be one of the largest online gaming companies in Europe. Ontario’s sports betting rules were relaxed as of April 4, 2022, when Ontarians became free to place single game bets and futures on regulated sporting events. Gaming operators in Ontario must register with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and enter an operating agreement with iGaming to offer games to Ontario players.

The Betsafe website is currently active, and bettors can sign up through its app.The new sportsbook offers a variety of sports for players to place bets on. The four major sports are available as well as many others. Betsson AB has a gaming license in 19 jurisdictions, according to its website.
