Best CFL Betting Sites in 2024
Best Betting Sites for CFL Betting
The CFL, or Canadian Football League, is not as popular as those massive sports leagues in the USA, but it still has a dedicated following of fans who still appreciate the eccentricities and history of the league, which is coming up on its 110th Grey Cup during the 2023 season. In the CFL they play football, but it’s a little bit different from the American football that most people are familiar with, which is what gives it a bit of its cache.
On this page we’re not only going to break down what the CFL is, who the top teams are, who the best players are, and the pros and cons of the league when compared to the NFL, but we’re also going to fill you in on everything you need to know to bet on the CFL as well.
How We Rate the Bookmakers?
Before getting into your search for the right CFL betting site for you, it’s important to consider all of the different factors and features of different sportsbooks. First and foremost of these is the reputation of the sportsbook. You don’t want to give your money to a sketchy sports betting site, so looking into the background of sportsbooks before you sign up with them is important. You want to make sure they’re trustworthy, responsible, and licensed and registered with the proper authorities.
You also want to make sure you’re joining a betting site that will accept your preferred method of deposit and withdrawal, because if you can’t make bets or withdraw payouts, there’s really no point in signing up, right? After that, you’re looking more closely at which sportsbooks specialize in the sports and leagues that you intend to do most of your betting on, in this case, the CFL.
There are a lot of different things to weigh here because every sportsbook has their strengths and their weaknesses when it comes to CFL betting. You want to make sure you’re going with a sportsbook that’s got a wide range of CFL betting options, which means a lot of different types of CFL bets and a lot of markets for each game.
You also want to search out those sports betting sites that are offering bonuses and promotions related to the CFL so you can get extra value on some of your bets. The same goes with searching for the best CFL odds you can find because the odds are what determine how much money you can win in the first place.

Is CFL Betting Legal In Canada?
The short answer is yes, sports betting, including bets on the CFL, are entirely legal in Canada nowadays. You need to ensure that your sportsbook has a solid reputation and is registered and licensed by the proper gambling authorities in whichever province you're in, for example the AGCO if you’re doing your wagering in Ontario. Below you can find more deatiles on the different provinces.
How to Open an Account with a CFL Betting Site?
Now that we’ve covered all of our top CFL sportsbooks and what they can and can’t bring to the table for you as a bettor, it’s important we go over how exactly you can go about joining one of these sportsbooks. It’s relatively simple, but for beginners it can definitely seem a bit daunting. However, if you follow our step-by-step guide below, you shouldn’t have any issues or stress during the process.
- Sign up for a betting account
On the homepage of your preferred CFL betting site you should find a sign up button, usually in the top right corner. Once you click that you will begin the sign up process, which includes providing the sportsbook with personal information such as your name, your birth date, your email, your phone number, and your address.
- Deposit your betting funds
Decide on how much you want to budget yourself for your CFL betting and proceed to the deposit section of the sportsbook. Here you will have to provide the sportsbook with financial information related to your preferred banking method. This will usually be a credit card, a wire transfer, or another online banking option. Make sure you’re not incurring any hidden fees in the process.
- Place your CFL bets
Now that you’ve got an account and you’ve got your funds ready, it’s time to do your research on the markets that interest you and find yourself some value. Once you’ve identified the best bets for you, simply input your stake and place the bet. After that, there’s nothing to do but enjoy the CFL action and watch your winnings roll in.
CFL Betting Promotions & Bonuses
One of the biggest ways for bettors to make the most of their sports betting is by taking advantage of as many bonuses and promotions as you can. There are a few major bonuses that are offered most often by sportsbooks that we’ve laid out for you below.
- Signup/Welcome Bonus
This type of promotion is generally how sportsbooks entice bettors to join their site. How it works is they will offer to match a new user’s first deposit up to a certain amount, sometimes as much as thousands. This is why it’s smart to sign up at several different CFL betting sites, so that you can get several deposits matched.
- Free Bets
Offered to all types of users whether new or sharp, this is a bonus that sportsbooks will offer on specific CFL games to entice the user to bet more on that game or league or sport. A lot of sharp bettors will wait for a free bet to come along and cook up a smart and safe parlay to make the most out of the no risk bet.
- Boosted Odds
Sportsbooks will also offer up boosted odds on popular sports or matchups. This means that there will be certain markets related to a CFL game that will have much more lucrative odds for the bettor than they’re supposed to because the sportsbook is ‘boosting’ those odds in your favor. It’s a great way to get extra value on your bets.
How to Bet on CFL Games?
In this section you will find all the information you need to make smart and successful bets on the CFL. We’ll break down everything from CFL betting strategies, to the structure of the league, to the most important betting features a CFL bettor should consider.
CFL Structure
The CFL consists of nine teams, all of which are based in Canadian cities across the nation. These nine teams are divided into two divisions, four teams in the East Division and five teams in the West Division. The regular season generally runs from mid-June to November and features 21 weeks of action, with each team playing 18 games. Each club also receives three bye weeks throughout the season, which are weeks off where they don’t have a game scheduled.
Each team plays the other eight teams in the league twice plus two additional divisional games, which are rotated on a yearly basis. Apart from the Grey Cup, the Labour Day Classic is probably the biggest event of the season. It is played over Labour Day weekend in September and sees geographical rivals lock horns: Toronto Argonauts-Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Edmonton Elks-Calgary Stampeders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers-Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Montreal Alouettes-Ottawa Redblacks.
Much like in the NHL and European football, teams are awarded points for each game, with two being given for a win, one for a tie, and none for a loss. The point totals of each team determine where they sit in the standings and whether they will make it to the league’s six-team playoff tournament. The top seed in each division gets a bye for the Divisional Semis, with the second and third duking it out for a spot in the Divisional Finals against them. The winners of the Divisional finals meet in the Grey Cup in late November.
CFL Betting Types
There are many different types of bets to consider when wagering on the CFL. They’re largely similar to those you’d see on a standard NFL betting slate, but we’ll break the most common ones down just in case.
- Moneyline → This is the simplest bet and the one beginner’s should start with. It’s a simple wager on who will win the game.
- Totals → Another pretty popular one, this type of bet is on the amount of points scored in the contest rather than the winner of that contest. The oddsmakers set a line, and you bet on whether you think the game will see over that number of points, or under.
- Point Spread → Spread betting is when a favorite lays a certain amount of points and an underdog takes a certain amount of points before the game starts to make the playing field a little more even for bettors. For example, a team with a -7.5 point spread will not only need to win, but win by 8 points or more to win the bet, while a team with a +4.5 point spread only needs to lose by less than 5 points.
- Player Props → This is a bet on a specific outcome for a specific player. You can bet on a wide range of outcomes such as whether a player will score a touchdown, how many touchdowns they’ll score, how many yards they’ll gain, whether they’ll throw an interception, how many sacks they’ll record, how many receptions they’ll grab, and much more.
- Futures → Instead of a bet on a single game, a futures bet allows punters to bet on the outcome of an entire season, which is why the odds you get on futures are generally a lot more lucrative—so much can go wrong over the course of a season. You can bet on things like who will win the Grey Cup, who will reach the Grey Cup, who will make the playoffs, and how many wins a team will get in a season.
Where to Find the Best CFL Odds?
While it’s important to do your research and figure out what the best betting markets are depending on CFL news and injuries, another crucial step to successful betting is to ensure you’re getting the best odds on whatever bets you’re making. To do that you’ve got to compare the CFL odds or lines being offered by different sportsbooks.
The practice of comparing odds across several betting sites is commonly known as ‘shopping lines.’ Basically you go to a few different sportsbook options and find the market you’re interested in betting on and compare how lucrative the odds are compared to one another. Depending on what you’re betting on, you might want to roll with different sportsbooks.
For example, if there’s a game where the Argonauts are favorites over the Blue Bombers to win, different sportsbooks might have better odds depending on if you’re betting on the underdog of the favorite. Be sure to do your due diligence with your betting odds because they are what determine how much your payout is in the end.
CFL Betting Features
Though we’ve mentioned a few important features for CFL betting sites already on this page, here we’re going to break them down in a little more detail so you know exactly what you’re looking for in a sportsbook.
- Banking Methods
Deposit and withdrawal methods can vary quite widely from sportsbook to sportsbook, so it’s crucial that your choice matches up with your preferred method of online banking. You also want to be on the lookout for things like deposit fees and deposit delays as well.
- CFL Coverage
If you’re looking to focus your betting energy on the CFL, you want to check out each prospective betting site’s CFL betting section to make sure that they offer the markets you’re looking for with solid and competitive odds.
- Live Betting
One of the most popular ways to bet nowadays is live or in-play betting, where you can watch a game, determine patterns or mismatches, and make bets during the action to take advantage of what you’ve identified.
- Early Cashout
Sometimes you regret making a bet after the action has started, which is when the early cashout feature is a great option. You can choose to cash out your bet early and get at least a part of your stake back if you’ve lost confidence in your bet.
- Live Streaming
Some sportsbooks are starting to offer live streaming of the events you’re betting on. While this is still pretty rare for the biggest sports leagues, more fringe competitions like horse racing, e-sports, and even the CFL have a better chance of being shown live through a sportsbook.
- Bonuses & Promotions
All things being equal, the bonuses and promotions that a sportsbook is offering can be the cherry on top that convinces you to make your choice. Look as deep into their long-term tendencies, however, because you want to still be reaping the rewards of those offers long after you’ve signed up.
CFL Betting Strategies
It’s always best to go into something with a plan or a strategy, and the same goes for CFL betting. To help make sure you get off on the right foot with your CFL bets, we’ve listed a few of our go-to betting strategies.
- Bet On Underdogs Early
Historically there has always been a lot of turnover for players and coaches year over year in the CFL and that much uncertainty means underdogs are always a great play in the early weeks of the season. Since 2006, underdogs have hit at a ridiculous 61.7 clip over the first four weeks of the season, including going 10-5 during that first month in 2021.
- Special Teams Factor
While kickoff and punt returns are essentially getting legislated out of the NFL, they’re still a huge part of the CFL. Since teams only have two downs to get the yardage they need to keep a drive alive, punts are much more common. The CFL also doesn’t have a fair catch rule, with players on kick coverage required to give the returner a five yard bubble when they catch it. Special teams are much more important in the CFL, so consider which teams have stronger special teams units that could be x-factors in any given game.
- Track Splits
It may not be as easy to do this for the CFL since there isn’t as much stat-keeping going on, but it’s not hard to do manually either. What you want to do is track how teams perform in different situations so that you can predict their performances moving forward. This includes team splits at home or away, or during the first half of the season versus the second half, or how they perform in the first half of games versus the second half of games.
- Bet The Best Number
As mentioned above, you’re doing yourself a disservice if you’re not shopping lines, so make sure to always check out a few different sportsbooks for each bet you place so that you know you’re always getting the most bang for your buck.
Singles Vs. Parlays
While single bets are much safer and far less risky, they don’t reward the bettor as much for a win. Meanwhile a parlay is much less safe and far more risky, but if the bettor wins, they usually win big-time. For example, if you set up a 7-bet parlay, you need every one of those seven bets to hit or else you win nothing.
If you go six for seven on a parlay, you win nothing just like if you’d gone zero for seven. Meanwhile, if you make seven single bets and hit five, you win those five that hit and only lose the two that didn’t. It all depends on how confident you are in your entire parlay and not just on a couple of your choices. If you really like just one market, go with a single, but if you have a strong feeling about several bets, go with the parlay. We’d recommend limiting your parlays to three to five picks max, because while anything more will result in enormous payouts, it also reduces the probability of your bet immensely.
CFL Betting Trends & Rules
When betting on any sport it’s important to keep yourself up to date on the happenings of that league and how they affect betting trends. One of the longest ongoing CFL betting trends is how low-scoring the games are compared to the lines set by the bookmakers, especially in the first week of action.
Since 2014, the under is 19-9 in Week 1 of the CFL season, so that’s definitely a great way to start the campaign off hot. Overall, unders have hit at about a 55 percent clip going all the way back to 2005, and there has only been one season during that time where the over hit more often than the under. The games are more wide open, which means bookmakers adjust their totals accordingly.
How NFL Bettors Can Bet on the CFL?
Despite a few small differences, the CFL and the NFL score games pretty similarly, so the CFL is a great place for sharp NFL bettors to take on a new challenge and expand their betting options significantly. You’ll see nearly all of the same markets including moneyline, point spread, point total, player touchdown and yards props, and more.
CFL Betting Rules
You can generally expect the CFL to have similar betting rules and limitations as in the NFL, but there are a few unique aspects of betting on the CFL that are worth noting here.
- Overtime is possession-based rather than time-based like in the NFL.
- There are no bets available about the receiving team’s field position because possessions automatically start at the 35-yard-line after scores.
- Teams can score single points, so be sure to take that into account when you’re betting on the spread or total of a CFL game.
Betting on the Grey Cup
The nine teams competing in the CFL all have their eyes on one thing: winning the Grey Cup. While betting on the CFL regular season is popular, it’s nowhere near as big as the betting action that goes on for the Grey Cup. The Grey Cup sometimes sees as much or more action for that one championship game than the rest of the CFL season combined. In other words, it’s a big deal.
You can make any kind of bet on the Grey Cup you want from moneyline, point spread, totals, or even a plethora of player prop bets. What’s unique about betting on the Grey Cup, however, is you can do it at the start of the season before any teams have played a game through futures bets. You can bet on a team you think will go all the way before the season even starts.
Grey Cup vs. Super Bowl Betting
While NFL teams chase a Super Bowl championship and the Lombardi Trophy, CFL teams are after a Grey Cup championship and the storied trophy which goes by the same name. The Super Bowl is much bigger than the Grey Cup when it comes to popularity and therefore betting options, so you’re unlikely to see as many fun props for the Grey Cup as you will for the Super Bowl.
However, betting on the CFL can be a much smarter way to go because of the fact that there’s much more matchup data available since six of the nine teams make the playoffs and every team plays every other team twice during the regular season, unlike in the NFL where just 14 of 32 teams make it and some teams don’t even play each other once during the regular season.
Top CFL Teams & Players
If you want to have success betting on the CFL, you better get to know the teams and players in the league. To help jump start that research for you, we’ve listed the most popular teams and players with a little information on each so that you can begin to figure out where to put your money when betting on the CFL.
Top 3 Teams
- Toronto Argonauts
The Argonauts have won 18 Grey Cups—including the 2022 edition—in their history, more than any other CFL franchise. The Argos have employed some of the most biggest names in the CFL in the past including Doug Flutie, Pinball Clemons, and Damon Allen.
- Saskatchewan Roughriders
Probably the team with the best relationship to its city and fans considering they don’t have any other pro sports teams, the Roughriders have won just four Grey Cups in their history. If you wanted to see what a CFL game day atmosphere was all about, you’d go to a Roughriders game.
- Edmonton Elks
The recently renamed franchise has won 14 Grey Cup titles, most recently in 2015. They were dead last during the 2022 season, but they did have a pro sports record run of 37 straight playoff appearances that ended in 2005.
Top 3 Players
- Bo Levi Mitchell - QB
Newly acquired by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Mitchell has won two Grey Cups, two Grey Cup MVP awards, and two Most Outstanding Player (MVP equivalent) awards during his illustrious career.
- Zach Collaros - QB
The league’s reigning Most Outstanding Player in both 2021 and 2022, Collaros led the league in passing touchdowns in both seasons as well. He’s also won three Grey Cups, including the 2021 edition.
- Dalton Schoen - WR
In his first year in the CFL the Winnipeg Blue Bombers wideout won the Rookie of the Year award while leading the league in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
What’s the Difference Between the NFL & CFL?
While the CFL and NFL compete in very similar sports called football, there’s actually more differences between the two sports and leagues than one would think. Just in case you’re not as familiar with the eccentricities and unique caveats of Canadian football as you are with American football, we’ve laid out a few of the major differences that are worth knowing before you dive into any betting on the CFL.
- Number Of Players
While the NFL plays 11 a side, the CFL plays with 12 players on each side of the ball. The ball used in the CFL is also much bigger than the standard NFL size.
- Size Of The Field
The NFL field is 100 yards long from goal line to goal line and 53.3 yards wide, the CFL field is 110 yards long and 65 yards wide, allowing for a much more wide open style of play.
- Size Of The End Zones
NFL end zones measure 10 yards deep from the goal line to the goal posts, meanwhile the CFL end zones have double that depth at 20 yards, and the goal posts are situated at the goal line rather than the back of the end zone.
- Number Of Downs
In the NFL, a team has four downs to gain 10 yards, the fourth of which is usually used to punt to the other team to improve field position if they can’t get the necessary yardage during the first three tries. In the CFL, the goal is also to get 10 yards, but teams only have three downs to get it instead of four. With the punt generally coming on third down in the CFL, that means there is a lot less running and a lot more passing.
- Scoring
In both the NFL and CFL teams get three points for a field goal and seven points for a touchdown plus the extra point, but in the CFL you can also score a single point by itself, known as a rouge, by punting or kicking the ball through the end zone, something that you are not rewarded for in the NFL. A rouge can also be scored in the CFL if a ball is punted or kicked into the opponent’s end zone and your opponent is unable to run the ball out of the end zone.
- Size Of The League
While the NFL boasts a 32-team league, the CFL is much smaller, with just nine teams competing.
