Fight Details
Alex Pereira will fight Jamahal Hill for the UFC’s light heavyweight championship on April 13 at UFC 300 in Las Vegas. Pereira is a slight underdog heading into this fight on the UFC betting sites. Pereira has -130 odds to win the fight on Bodog. Hill is the early underdog by a small margin. He has +110 odds to pull off the upset. This is the UFC 300 main event.
Pereira enters this fight with a 9-2 professional MMA record. He is a former middleweight champion and the current light heavyweight champ. Hill has a 12-1 professional MMA record and is a former light heavyweight champ. Pereira is ranked number four on the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings list. Hill is the number one ranked light heavyweight in the UFC.
Alex “Poatan” Pereira
A two-time champion — at middleweight and light heavyweight — in the UFC, Alex Pereira will attempt to successfully defend his title for the first time in the octagon. Pereira won the middleweight championship with a KO/TKO victory against Israel Adesanya at UFC 287. He lost the championship in the rematch a few months later, UFC 287. He then moved up in weight and eventually captured the light heavyweight title by defeating Jiri Prochazka by KO/TKO. This is his first title defence fight.
Pereira is recognized as one of the best strikers in the UFC. And he has a ton of power. Four of his six victories in the octagon were by KO/TKO. Pereira has won fights in the UFC thanks to that power and his outstanding striking, but he has also shown a lot of toughness and resilience. At different points in a few of his fights, Pereira has looked like a fighter who could be beat or was near defeat. Somehow he consistently finds a way to stay in the fight and leave victorious. Hill is another fighter who prefers to keep fights on their feet. If a light heavyweight in the UFC can beat Hill in the striking department, Pereira is definitely someone who should have a good shot.
Jamahal “Sweet Dreams” Hill
A former light heavyweight champion, Hill relinquished the championship after “he ruptured an Achilles tendon” last year. He won the title by defeating Glover Teixeira at UFC 283 in January of 2023. This will be Hill’s first fight since winning the title. Hill, like Pereira, has done most of his damage on his feet with his striking and also has a ton of knockout power. But he prefers to strike with punches more than kicks, unlike Pereira.
This is a fight that looks almost perfect for both fighters. Hill and Pereira both want to exchange strikes and don’t mind getting into a striking war. What seems to separate Hill from Pereira is his strong chin and durability. Although he has been cut in fights, Hill has not often looked like he was seriously hurt by a strike throughout his time in the octagon. His only loss was a KO/TKO loss to Paul Craig at UFC 263 in 2021, but the fight was stopped because Hill’s arm was broken and he was fighting with one arm as a result. Hill should have a shot in the fight because it will likely be fought mainly on the feet. He has shown the ability to defend and outstrike his opponents throughout a fight. He also should have the power to knock Pereira out.
