Soccer: 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup begins, Canada huge underdogs

Some of the best soccer players in the world will be in Australia and New Zealand to showcase their talents at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup. The tournament begins on July 20. Soccer betting sites are not giving Canada much of a chance to win. The Canadian women have the 10th best odds at this year’s World Cup.

Nigeria has the worst odds to win group B by a wide margin. The group is made up of team Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, and Nigeria. Forward Janine Beckie, one of Canada’s two top goal scorers during the 2020 Olympics, will miss the World Cup because of an ACL tear in her right knee. Midfielder Jessie Fleming — the other top scorer from 2020 and 2022 Canada Soccer Player of the Year — is available for Canada and will play in the tournament. • Canada finished second at the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship. They lost 1-0 to USA in the final after defeating Jamaica in the semi-final.
• Canada took home gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. They defeated USA in the semifinals and went on to beat Sweden in the gold medal match by penalty shootout. The score was 1-1 after extra time. 
• Sweden defeated Canada 1-0 in the round of 16 at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France. Sweden went on to claim third place after losing to Netherlands in the semi-final.
