History repeated itself on Monday when Aaron Rodgers was traded the New York Jets, following in Brett Favre’s footsteps. The AFC playoff picture is a lot more intriguing with Rodgers. An argument can be made that four of the five best quarterbacks in the league are in the AFC now after the Rodgers trade and Tom Brady’s retirement. How do the Jets match up with the rest of the conference?

Aaron Rodgers traded to the New York Jets
Aaron Rodgers was officially traded to the New York Jets on Monday, bringing an end to months of speculation according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Jets receive Aaron Rodgers, the 15th pick and a 5th round pick in this year’s draft. The Packers receive this year’s 13th pick, a 2nd round pick, a 6th round pick, and a conditional 2nd round pick in 2024 that could become a first if Rodgers takes enough snaps, according to Adam Schefter.
#Jets GM Joe Douglas on what adding Aaron Rodgers could mean for Zach Wilson: "I think this is going to be a great thing for Zach. Zach's ceiling is unlimited. The opportunity to shadow and be with a first-ballot Hall of Fame QB will be a great opportunity and experience."… pic.twitter.com/IrB7ivICs3

The Jets selected BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the 2nd pick in the 2021 NFL draft. However, Wilson has not lived up to being a number two overall draft pick yet. Last season Wilson was benched during a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday Night Football, a head to head matchup with Trevor Lawrence, the number one pick in Wilson’s draft class. Wilson threw more interceptions than touchdowns in each of his first two seasons and has a 15-18 touchdown to interception ratio. Rodgers has 475 touchdowns and 105 interceptions in his career.

AFC playoff picture
The favourite to win the AFC on NFL betting sites is the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs have +341 odds to win the AFC on Tonybet. The NFL Draft on Thursday should change some things, but the Jets situation with Wilson is proof that draft picks don’t always work out. The Chiefs lost JuJu Smith-Schuster to the New England Patriots in free agency, but most of their core offensive players are still there. Last season proved that the Chiefs should always have a chance in the AFC as long as Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Andy Reid are at their best.
The Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals have the second and third best odds to win the AFC. The Bills have +452 odds and the Bengals have +456 odds on Tonybet. The Bengals picked up OT Orlando Brown Jr. and OT Cody Ford via free agency. The Bills picked up G Connor McGovern from the Dallas Cowboys and RB Damien Harris, but lost LB Tremaine Edmunds. Although neither team made a move as big as the Jets, the Bills and Bengals have young stars who got another year in the NFL under their belts last season. It’s possible both teams will get better because of the growth of their stars alone.
The Jets vs AFC
The Jets have the 4th best odds to win the AFC, and the sixth best odds to win the Super Bowl. They have +704 odds to win the AFC and +1247 odds to win the Super Bowl on Tonybet. Although Aaron Rodgers is one of the greatest quarterbacks in league history, the last few seasons have proved that he can’t take a team to the Super Bowl by himself. Rodgers won two of the last three regular season MVP awards, and hasn’t played in a Super Bowl since 2011.
The Jets offense will be completely different this season with the addition of Rodgers, Mecole Hardman, and Allen Lazard, but their defense will have a huge impact on the Jets’ chances in the AFC. Last year, the Jets defense allowed the third fewest passing yards, 17th fewest rushing yards, and fourth fewest points per game (18.6). Most expect the Jets to get better offensively, but can their defense get better or play as well as last season? The Jaguars, Chargers, and Dolphins are teams on the rise. They all have worse odds than the Jets to win the AFC, but fans shouldn’t be shocked if one or all of these teams end the season with a better record than New York.
