NFL: Patrick Mahomes Favoured to Win Super Bowl MVP

Who will take home Super Bowl MVP this year? One of the quarterbacks? Christian McCaffrey maybe? How about Travis Kelce or George Kittle? There are a ton of solid options to choose from.

Quick Take

  • Patrick Mahomes is the betting favourite to win third Super Bowl MVP
  • Brock Purdy has the second best odds
  • A ton of players worthy of consideration this year

The betting favourites

Like all the top awards in the NFL, quarterbacks have a better shot at winning the Super Bowl MVP award than all the other positions. Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP at the end of both of his championship wins. No surprise, Mahomes is the betting favourite to win his third Super Bowl MVP on NFL betting sites. He has +120 odds to take home the award on Bodog. Mahomes should be a solid choice here because the Chiefs have often been Mahomes or bust on offence this season. No receiver on their roster went over 1,000 yards in the regular season, and Travis Kelce missed the 1,000-yard mark by 16 yards. None of their running backs rushed for 1,000 yards either. If the Chiefs win the Super Bowl, Mahomes will probably play a big role.

The same can not be said for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, although he has the second best odds to win the award on Bodog. Purdy is right behind Mahomes at +225. Purdy is playing with three guys who are arguably better players than he is: Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle. And wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk had 1,342 receiving yards this season. Regardless, Purdy should have a great shot at Super Bowl MVP if the 49ers win because of the position he plays.

The non-QBs with the best odds

Unlike the regular season MVP award, the Super Bowl MVP award has not been an award just for quarterbacks. The last 10 regular season MVP winners were quarterbacks. Running back Adrian Peterson was the last non-QB to win the award. He won the regular season MVP for the 2012-2013 season. The Super Bowl MVP Award has gone to a quarterback in six of the last 10 Super Bowls. The award went to two linebackers and two wide receivers during that stretch. Cooper Kupp won the award after Super Bowl 56, a couple of seasons ago. He had eight catches, 92 yards, and two touchdowns in the game.

Christian McCaffrey has the third best odds to win the award at +450. He is a huge part of what the 49ers do on offence, so he should have a lot of opportunities to pile up numbers. McCaffrey has been a touchdown scoring machine all season. McCaffrey looks like a solid pick, but a running back has not won the award since Terrell Davis was named MVP after Super Bowl 32. Travis Kelce and Deebo Samuel have the third and fourth best odds. Kelce has +1000 odds. Samuel has +2000 odds. Kelce and Samuel are two of the best players in the league. A big performance by either one of them would not be shocking. Kelce is recognized as one of the greatest tight ends of all time, but Samuel might be a safer bet here because a TE has never won the award.

The underdogs

A ton of players are worth considering because the award is given to a player for their performance in one game. Any starter on defence could take home the award with a big game. 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa has +6500 odds. Linebacker Fred Warner is at +10000. Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones has +7500 odds. Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed is at +15000. But remember, the award will most likely go to a player on the winning team.

Isiah Pacheco at +2500, Rashee Rice at +5000, Brandon Aiyuk at +5000, and George Kittle at +6000 are all worth considering because they have all had a big game in these playoffs and all of them had solid regular seasons. These guys will probably be given an opportunity to impact this game. Winning the Super Bowl MVP will be an extremely difficult task with two targets or four to five rushing attempts.
