NBA: 2023-2024 MVP odds, and can Grady Dick win Rookie of The Year?

It is never too early to bet on NBA awards. Getting a bet in before the odds change makes a huge difference. Odds for the 2023-2024 MVP are available. Joel Embiid is the reigning MVP, but he is not in the top three. Here is a breakdown of the upcoming MVP race. We also take a look at whether or not Gradey Dick has a shot at the Rookie of The Year award.

Quick Take

  • Reigning MVP Joel Embiid has the fourth best odds
  • Can Zion Williamson, Donovan Mitchell, or DeAaron Fox win?
  • Gradey Dick has +5000 odds to win ROY

The MVP betting favourite

Nikola Jokic is once again the betting favourite to win the MVP award on NBA betting sites. The reigning Finals MVP has +450 odds to win regular season MVP on 888sport. He is slightly ahead of Dallas Mavericks forward Luka Doncic and Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokoumpo. Doncic has +500 odds, and Antetokounmpo has +550. Philadelphia 76ers center, and reigning MVP, Joel Embiid has only the fourth best odds at +600.

After coming off an outstanding performance during the 2022-2023 NBA playoffs, Jokic looks like a strong pick to win his third MVP in four years. Jokic finished second in MVP voting last season, the four other players who finished in the top five are Embiid, Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Tatum and Jokic are the only two that played 70 games or more in any of the last three seasons. This year, players need to play in at least 65 games to be eligible for MVP. Last season Jokic played 69 games, the fewest of his career.

Jokic can put up triple doubles in his sleep and is on one of the best teams in the league. If he’s healthy, he will most likely have the numbers and enough wins to be a serious contender for the award again. And someone will have to take the award from him with an incredible season.

Players who can beat out Jokic

Joel Embiid, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry are probably the only guys that have a good chance to win the award next season, other than Jokic, based on precedent. To win the MVP, a player needs to have a great statistical season and play for a good team. These guys all have the ability to put up jaw dropping numbers and are on potential playoff teams.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Damian Lillard, and Karl-Anthony Towns might have numbers worthy of MVP consideration by the end of the season, but they will not win the award if their teams miss the playoffs or are in the play-in tournament. It’s possible, but highly unlikely. Last season, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.4 points, 5.5 assists, 1 block, 1.6 steals, and shot 51% from the field. He received 0 first place, second place, or third place votes for MVP.

Huge risks that could pay off

At +2500 odds on 888sport, Donovan Mitchell might be worth considering. Mitchell is another player that fits the MVP bill, numbers and wins. He scored 71 points in one game last season, so there is no reason to assume he will not up his scoring average or lead the league in scoring. If he does, and the Cleveland Cavaliers are one of the better teams in the east again, Mitchell could find himself in MVP contention with a little injury help.

Zion Williamson and De’Aaron Fox are also worth taking a risk on because of their odds. Williamson has +3300 odds. Fox has +4000 odds. These are two of the best young players in the league. If they stay healthy and take their games to the next level, there is no reason one of them can not win MVP.

Can Gradey Dick win ROY?

The Toronto Raptors selected Gradey Dick with the 13th pick in the draft. Dick is a huge underdog to win Rookie of The Year on 888sport. He has +5000 odds. Raptors general manager Bobby Webster said “he’s a rookie, but you hope he can come off the bench and make some shots.” This is not good news for those considering him because he will need a bigger role if he hopes to have any shot at the award. With Victor Wembanyama, Scoot Henderson, and Chet Holmgren all fighting for ROY, Dick has no shot if this will be his role with the Raptors.
