March Madness: Sweet 16 Games Odds, Betting Lines & Previews

This year’s March Madness has featured huge upsets. The Sweet 16 could lead to more. Princeton will try to take down Creighton and land themselves a potential match with tournament favorite Alabama. In addition, Arkansas and Florida Atlantic have a chance to reach the Elite 8 as a 9th and 8th seed.

Quick Take

  • Princeton a +9.5 underdog against Creighton
  • Alabama’s Brandon Miller dealing with groin injury
  • FAU +5.5 underdog against Tennessee

1 Alabama Crimson Tide (-7.5) vs 5 San Diego State Aztecs (+7.5)

  • Moneyline: Alabama (-358), San Diego State (+260)

Alabama earned its spot in the sweet 16 by defeating Texas A&M-CC and Maryland by over 20 points in the first two rounds. Alabama forward Brandon Miller is, to experts, one of the best players in the NCAA. Miller is dealing with a groin injury, but will likely play against SDSU, according to USAToday. San Diego State defeated the 12th and 13th-seeded teams in the first two rounds of the tournament. Alabama will be the first team San Diego plays against in the tournament that is seeded in the top 10.

6 Creighton Bluejays (-9.5) vs 15 Princeton Tigers (+9.5)

  • Moneyline: Creighton (-556), Princeton (+350)

Princeton is the lowest seeded team remaining in the tournament, FAU is the next closest at nine. Princeton upset Arizona in the first round, they took the lead with about two minutes remaining in the game and held on to win a tight game.  They followed that up with a win over Missouri. Princeton held both of their first two opponents to 63 or fewer points in the first two rounds, but Creighton didn’t score less than 72 in their first two games. Creighton defeated NC State in the first round, a game that was close until the last minute. The Bluejays then defeated Baylor.

9 Florida Atlantic Owls (+5.5) vs 4 Tennessee Volunteers (-5.5)

  • Moneyline: FAU (+190), Tennessee (-250)

FAU defeated Fair Dickinson, the surprise team that knocked out number 1 seed Purdue, in their last game by eight. Both of FAU’s games were close down the stretch. After leading #13 Louisiana with 11 minutes left, Tennessee held on to beat Louisiana 58-55. Tennessee held both of their first two opponents to 55 points or fewer, defeating Duke in the second round 65-52. FAU hasn’t scored less than 66 in their tournament games.

3 Kansas State Wildcats (+2.5) vs 7 Michigan State Spartans (-2.5)

  • Moneyline: Kansas State (+110), Michigan State (-143)

Kansas State is coming off a close 69-75 win against Kentucky. Kansas State finished the game with 11 steals and four blocks, they had nine steals and nine blocks against Montana State in the first round. Despite winning their second round game against Marquette by nine points, Michigan State was only ahead by one with a little over three minutes to play in the game. Their game against USC wasn’t as close. Both teams have held their opponents to fewer than 70 points.

1 Houston Cougars (-7.5) vs 5 Miami Hurricanes (+7.5)

  • Moneyline: Houston (-334), Miami (+240)

Miami starting guard Wooga Poplar may not play against Houston because of a back injury. Miami was almost upset by Drake in the first round. They trailed Drake by three with three minutes remaining, but their second game against Indiana wasn’t close down the stretch. Houston’s game, a 63-52 win, against Northern Kentucky was close until about two minutes. Houston currently has the second best odds to win the tournament at +390 on Bet99.

3 Xavier Musketeers (+4.5) vs 2 Texas Longhorns (-4.5)

  • Moneyline: Xavier (+155), Texas (-200)

Xavier erased a 13 point 2nd half deficit against Kennesaw in the first round to win 72-67. In their win against Pittsburgh, six Xavier players scored 10 or more points. They will play against Texas. This will be the first game either team plays against a team seeded higher than 10. Texas defeated Colgate in a first round game that wasn’t very close for much of the second half. Texas’ win over Penn State was tight until the buzzer.

8 Arkansas Razorbacks (+3.5) vs 4 UConn Huskies (-3.5)

  • Moneyline: Arkansas (+140), UConn (-182)

Arkansas is the only team that has beaten a number 1 seed remaining in the tournament. Arkansas scored 45 points in the second half to pull off the upset against Kansas, last year’s tournament winner. UConn are still coming into this game as the favorite. Neither of UConn’s games were close down the stretch. UConn is averaging 34 points in the first half and 44.5 points in the second half.

3 Gonzaga Bulldogs (+2.5) vs 2 UCLA Bruins (-2.5)

  • Moneyline: Gonzaga (+110), UCLA (-143)

Both teams were in a close game in the second round. Gonzaga scored over 80 points in their first two tournament wins. Of the teams remaining in the tournament, Gonzaga has scored the second most points with 166 points in their first two games. In UCLA’s games against UNC Asheville and Northwestern, they allowed 116 total points. UCLA has the third best odds to win the tournament on NCAA betting sites.
