Euro 2024: Germany vs Hungary betting preview

Germany began Euro 2024 with a bang as they beat Scotland 5-1 in the tournament opener and they will be looking to keep it rolling on Wednesday with a clash against Hungary in Group A action. The kick-off is scheduled for 12 PM ET at MHPArena in Stuttgart. Germany is one of the favorites this summer and did live up to expectations on matchday one. They’re expected to come out on top in this group. For the Hungarians, it’s win or go home. Having suffered a 3-1 defeat to Switzerland in their first match. Below, we’ll preview the game.

Quick Take

  • Germany faces Hungary on Wednesday
  • The Germans are a heavy favorite after a big win on matchday one
  • Read on for the preview

Who is in Group A?

Group A consists of Germany, Hungary, Scotland, and Switzerland. The Germans and the Swiss are the two who are expected to go through, while the Hungarians probably have the best opportunity at making it as a third place team, as we’ll discuss more later.

Germany

Expectations haven’t been the highest for Germany in recent tournaments, but there was a feeling of optimism heading into Euro 2024. Julian Nagelsmann’s men undoubtedly showed their quality against a weak Scotland outfit. Florian Wirtz opened the scoring early before Jamal Musiala doubled their lead. Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug, and Emre Can all found the back of the net. The Germans put their attacking prowess on full display, which is something that’s not always evident with them. It was refreshing to see Germany produce the goods.

Nagelsmann’s group undoubtedly has the home advantage in the Euros but has unfortunately conceded in 13 straight games at major tournaments. They were very close to keeping a clean sheet against Scotland before Antonio Rudiger’s own goal. On a more positive note, the Germans can officially book their ticket to the last 16 with a victory over Hungary in Stuttgart.

Germany is also now unbeaten in five consecutive outings, with the last four ending in victory. That includes wins over France, the Netherlands, Greece, and of course, Scotland. Needless to say, the hosts are in good form and should be able to ride the momentum against a Hungarian side they’re superior to. Germany is a -400 favorite at 888sport for an implied win probability of 80%.

Hungary

While Hungary essentially has to win here to keep their knockout dreams alive, they have quite an impressive resume against Germany. Marco Rossi’s men played to a 2-2 draw with them at Euro 2020 and then managed to take four points from two games against the Germans in the Nations League. That will instill confidence in the Hungarians.

It was a rough start for Hungary at Euro 2024 though, losing to the Swiss. They were down two goals by halftime but got one back early in the second period through Barnabas Varga courtesy of a Dominik Szoboszlai assist. Switzerland added another in injury time to seal the deal, though.

Overall, however, Hungary has been playing well. That defeat was just their second in the last 17 games. Considering there are third-place berths for the knockout phase, the Hungarians still have a chance at going through if they can possibly secure a single point on Wednesday while beating Scotland on matchday three. Not all is lost quite yet, despite being a heavy underdog at soccer betting sites in Stuttgart.
