Champions League: Borussia Dortmund vs Newcastle United Betting Preview

The Champions League group stages are starting to heat up with matchday four this week. On Tuesday, we have a very important fixture on our hands in Group C between Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United, two clubs who are still very much in the mix of progressing to the Round of 16. The kick-off here is scheduled for 12:45 PM ET at Signal Iduna Park. This is the second straight clash between BVB and Newcastle, having locked horns on matchday three at St James’ Park. Dortmund ultimately ran out as 1-0 winners thanks to a first-half goal from Felix Nmecha.

Quick Take

  • Borussia Dortmund host Newcastle United on Tuesday
  • BVB won the return fixture on matchday three

Dortmund hungry for a result

The hosts are currently second in Group C with four points and even with a defeat, could still potentially move onto the knockout rounds. But considering what just happened over the weekend, Edin Terzic’s side will be hungry as can be for a result on Tuesday. Der Klassiker was a complete nightmare for Dortmund on Sunday, with Bayern Munich hammering them 4-0. The Black and Yellows looked totally hopeless on both ends of the pitch, with Harry Kane netting a hat-trick on his own. Needless to say, BVB was embarrassed.

That defeat dropped the club to fourth in the Bundesliga table and to be honest, it’s well known they aren’t going to compete for the title. And while that may not happen in the UCL either, Tuesday presents an opportunity to move one step closer to progressing at the very least. So far, Dortmund is 1-1-1 in the competition, beating Newcastle while losing to PSG and settling for a scoreless stalemate with AC Milan.

The concerning part however is Terzic’s squad has netted a mere one goal in the Champions League. There’s really no lethal finisher who Dortmund can point to and rely on, but Julian Brandt is about their best. He’s bagged four in league action but has yet to make much of an impact in Europe. BVB has +160 odds at 888sport for Tuesday’s encounter.

Newcastle in good form

I’m sure it’s still surreal to Newcastle supporters that the club is actually in the Champions League after so many years of suffering. And while the defeat on the road in Germany was disappointing, the Magpies have been in great form since. Eddie Howe’s squad played to a 2-2 draw with Wolves before hammering Manchester United 3-0 in the Carabao Cup, at Old Trafford to boot. Then on Saturday, Anthony Gordon’s 64th-minute goal proved to be the winner against Arsenal in North London, another historic victory for Newcastle. They’re now sixth in the Premier League standings and only four points off a UCL spot for next season.

As for the current competition, the Magpies have shown extremely well. The highlight was surely a 4-0 smashing of PSG at St. James’ Park on matchday two, where Kylian Mbappe had one of his worst games ever. The Newcastle backline made his life a living hell. Although the Parisiens aren’t the same force of the past, it was still a statement win that proved this side is no joke.

Three points on Tuesday would solidify Newcastle’s spot in second in Group C and could potentially move them into first place, depending on what happens between PSG and Milan. But, it won’t be easy playing in front of the Yellow Wall in Dortmund. The Magpies have plus odds at most soccer betting sites.
